Explaining JSON Web Token (JWT) to a 10 year old Kid. Imagine you have a special box called a JWT. Inside this box, there are three parts: a header, a payload, and a signature. The header is like the label on the outside of the box. It tells us what type of box it is and how it's secured. It's usually written in a format called JSON, which is just a way to organize information using curly braces { } and colons : . The payload is like the actual message or information you want to send. It could be your name, age, or any other data you want to share. It's also written in JSON format, so it's easy to understand and work with. Now, the signature is what makes the JWT secure. It's like a special seal that only the sender knows how to create. The signature is created using a secret code, kind of like a password. This signature ensures that nobody can tamper with the contents of the JWT without the sender knowing about it. When you want to send the JWT to a server, you put the header, payload, and signature inside the box. Then you send it over to the server. It costs an oil company very little to pay a contractor to employ, say, 50 people, each with 50 fake accounts, to flood the timelines of anyone who wants to stop climate breakdown. Now that Twitter's controls have broken down completely, the bots have come to dominate.

What’s happening with Reddit right now is mind blowing! I can’t think of any other platform where the users have so much power.

If they can't afford to keep absorbing the minimal loss that API access represents - or negotiate a fair framework that makes third-party resources viable - they they certainly can't afford what it would cost to actually pay for content moderation like everyone else does.

What volunteer moderators and developers alike are hearing is that their work has no value and no security. What Reddit somehow still does not realise is that their entire business model is predicated on good will from volunteers who run most of the site for them.

This has been compounded by Reddit's refusal to meaningfully negotiate with affected parties and its bad faith engagement with (and publicly documented lies about) third-party developers, coming from the very top of the company.

Reddit - despite promising to improve things since at least 2015! - has never invested sufficiently in native moderation tools on any platform, making volunteer workflows hugely dependent on third-party apps and tools.

The other big problem is that the main users of the extra tools and functionality is *other* volunteer labour - the moderators who create communities and curate content, whose free work makes up the everyday fabric of the site.

But the reason this is such a big deal is not *just* that Reddit has been sweeping the rug out from under third-paper developers, reducing functionality and accessibility across the board without committing to replacing it first.

To take just one very publicised example: Reddit's own app is notoriously poor when it comes to interfacing with screen readers - blind users have to pretty much universally use now defunct third-party apps to access the site on mobile.

Reddit's changes will make it unaffordable for many existing third-party apps to keep functioning - the short notice period and massive costs make it impossible for them to continue. This will have immediate consequences for many users.

Reddit has long been pushing the boundaries of 'what happens if you let that tired person doing thankless work burn out'. But they are now actively hacking away at crucial, fragile foundations of the whole website.
