A 78-year-old filmmaker just dropped a trailer that broke the internet, and the career arc behind it spans half a century of one question asked four different ways. 1977. Spielberg is 30 years old, fresh off Jaws, and makes Close Encounters of the Third Kind on a $20 million budget. The aliens arrive as pure mystery. Lights in the sky, musical tones, a man who can't explain what he saw. America was two years past Vietnam, trust in institutions was collapsing, and Spielberg made a film where the government was hiding something beautiful. $307 million worldwide. The movie asked: what if they're out there? 1982. E.T. Spielberg is 35, his parents have divorced, and he channels the loneliness of a child from a broken home into a story about befriending something no one else understands. The alien isn't a mystery anymore. It's a friend. E.T. sat at #1 for 16 consecutive weekends, a record that still stands. $793 million worldwide on a $10.5 million budget. 75x return. The movie asked: what if they need us? 2005. War of the Worlds. Spielberg is 58. Post-9/11 America. The aliens aren't mysterious and they aren't friendly. They vaporize civilians in suburban New Jersey. Tom Cruise spends two hours trying to keep his kids alive. $603 million worldwide. The movie asked: what if they want to kill us? 2026. Disclosure Day. Spielberg is 78. The question has changed again. The aliens are already here. The government already knows. The trailer opens with a simple line: "If you found out we weren't alone, would that frighten you?" Emily Blunt plays a TV anchor who loses her ability to speak on air. Josh O'Connor plays a whistleblower trying to force the truth out. Colin Firth plays the man trying to stop him. Four alien films across 49 years. Wonder at 30. Loneliness at 35. Terror at 58. Truth at 78. Each one calibrated exactly to where both the filmmaker and the country were standing when the camera rolled. The screenplay is by David Koepp, who wrote Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds, and Indiana Jones 4. The code name during production was "The Dish." Box office forecasts have it opening around $45-59 million, which would make it the lowest-opening Spielberg summer film in decades. But this is also a completely original screenplay with no IP, no franchise, no sequel. In a summer dominated by sequels and adaptations, a 78-year-old just bet his legacy on an idea he's been circling since he was 30 years old. June 12.

Nearly every promising director in Hollywood seems to break out through horror, from Curry Barker with Obsession to Zach Cregger with Barbarian. A few years earlier, filmmakers like Ari Aster and Robert Eggers built their names through horror, and now Kane Parsons has become the youngest director in A24 history with his upcoming Backrooms film. There are countless more examples, and it’s no coincidence. Horror has become, or maybe has always been, one of the coolest and most liberating forms of art in the entertainment industry. It gives filmmakers the freedom to experiment, take risks, and explore strange or deeply personal ideas without the same level of judgment or restriction. More than any other genre, horror allows directors to create bold visions on relatively small budgets. It exists slightly outside the noise of massive studio expectations, which means filmmakers can chase originality instead of playing it safe. That freedom is exactly why so many of Hollywood’s most exciting new directors begin there. So the question is: has horror saved Hollywood by becoming the home for the freshest and weirdest ideas?

@mjarbo Barker has already shot his next film and is signed on for his third feature (the new Texas CM film). What really matters now is momentum, and he’s got it. Will be awesome to follow his career.

Make really good low budget horror movies. Market them well. Put them in theaters. Take chances. New ideas. New filmmakers. It has always been the way.
