We're really excited about this passion project. Ever since I met the other two Steakhouse brothers, @AesPoker and @SebVentures, they'd often make reference to a niche out-of-print book, "Scottish Banking: A History" by SG Checkland. It brings to life, in exhaustively researched detail, the development of the Scottish banking industry since its inception. For the first century or so, prior to the Act of Union and other elements that quietly slipped in supervision and rapt it to London, the banking system in Scotland emerged organically. Players discovered how to function, compete and serve Scottish citizens with financial services in an entirely self-regulated environment. For an agrarian country with no natural resources, this was fuel on the fire of innovation and philosophy, in an era that also produced thinkers like David Hume or Adam Smith. This network of funding helped catapult Scotland into the industrial revolution. Free banking in Scotland is the riposte to the error-laden assertion that "free banking doesn't work". Scotland, among other examples (Suffolk, Canada, etc), show that free banking not only doesn't "not work", but works the best when it is intervened with the least. And as @nic_carter has exhaustively documented, it fails the most when it is meddled with through regulation. This book is an inspiration for the way we analyze balance sheets in DeFi. Like Scottish banking, our industry is growing in spurts, making mistakes and evolving accordingly. All the TVL growth, hacks, DAO votes and even crypto twitter armchair commentary are replaying from the same psalter. Our view is that, like in Scotland, the sector as a whole trends towards becoming stronger and more resilient over time. We're proud to bring this book back to life in the most accessible way possible. We've digitized all the data tables that SG Checkland meticulously assembled, allowing for data analysis by other financial history nerds: books.steakhouse.financial It's a passion project and a mission statement. Our small way of paying crediting the history that we are replaying at tremendous speed. A homage to a small indomitable nation capable of having such a tremendous impact on the world. We've brought a fifty-year-old book on the history of Scottish banking back into print. For over a century, Scotland ran a stable banking system with no central bank. Banks issued their own notes, redeemable on demand. Competition kept them honest. Banknotes circulated so widely that gold and silver nearly disappeared from circulation, and in a crisis, rival banks would hold each other's notes to keep the whole system standing. We're financial history obsessives, and early Scottish banking is the closest precedent we've found to what stablecoins are today: private money competing in a free market system for people's deposits.
