The Landmark Supreme Court Verdict (ORISED Act) ​In July 2024, a 9-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court affirmed that states hold the constitutional right to tax mineral-bearing land. ​The Court allowed retrospective collection of cesses from April 1, 2005, under the Odisha Rural Infrastructure and Relief Development (ORISED) Act. ​This opened the doors for Odisha to recover over ₹1 lakh crore in past arrears.
