There’s this problem on the left I call Overton Poisoning. When the left were outsiders they were obsessed with this thing called moving the Overton Window. It meant they would stake out radical positions not because they genuinely believed in those positions, but because the very ACT of calling for those positions would broaden the scope of debate and increase the odds of a favorable compromise being enacted. In other words, they didn’t actually WANT the radical positions they advocated for - they wanted the leftward compromise. “Abolish police” = “weaken police” etc. But then these lunatics started getting funding and running candidates with an actual chance of winning. This is why every new leftist politician has to delete all their old tweets. This is also why when the journos ask them how society would even function without police they just start babbling like hobos - they have no answer. It was NEVER a real position, just a momentarily STRATEGIC position. Radicals give cover to moderates to move further left while appearing to be centrist because hey at least I’m not as radical as THOSE GUYS. It’s all deeply cynical and conniving of course. But the problem with the Overton Window moving strategy is that it in the long run it results in, like I said, Overton Poisoning, symptoms of which include: 1. You lie so much and so radically and for so long no one knows what you actually believe anymore. 2. You run for office and you have to explain why you said all that crazy stuff. 3. When you start winning elections your base feels betrayed because you start governing like the moderate. We could get off this lunatic rollercoaster any time if people would just be honest but I don’t think it’s going to happen.

High modernism as described by the book Seeing Like A State is the muscular faith of the 19th and early 20th centuries: linear progress, scientific law, technical mastery, rational production, and the belief that nature, including human nature, can be redesigned for greater welfare. In its own historical moment this was not obviously insane. Railroads, electricity, metallurgy, medicine, public health, chemistry, mass production, canals, and sanitation had changed life so violently that awe was rational. High modernism was not only domination. It also “promised freedom from scarcity, want and the arbitrariness of natural calamity.” Seeing Like A State's author was right about the danger of high modernism: when the map can no longer be corrected by the territory, muscular faith becomes catastrophe. But we overlearned the warning. Bring back high-modernist ambition, and add feedback loops. Abundance via superintelligence can be a powerful force making the feedback real. We must dream and build again.
