As Democrats move left, the Republican midterm playbook gets easier. Close elections are about building a coalition that gets you past 50%. Trump’s 2024 secret sauce was expanding the GOP coalition among working-class, noncollege, culturally moderate Hispanic voters — while also improving with independents. It looks very different from the Democratic Socialists’ base: younger, college-educated, higher-income urban voters concentrated in deep-blue districts. Winning a low-turnout socialist primary is not the same as building a national majority that appeals to Hispanics, independents, moderates, and working-class voters. Hispanics were about 11% of actual 2024 voters — large enough to swing close states. Trump didn’t win Hispanics nationally in 2024, but he came within 3 points. He went from 36% of Hispanic voters in 2020 to 48% in 2024. Among Hispanic men, the shift was even bigger: Trump won them 54–44 after Biden won them 59–36 in 2020. Hispanic men flipped from blue to red. Winning back and holding Hispanic voters is central to Trump’s coalition. For Republicans, it’s time to put the coalition back together.

Democrats are increasingly nominating democratic socialist candidates in deep-blue districts. That may energize the party’s progressive base, but it also risks alienating the independents and moderate voters they’ll need to win competitive statewide and congressional races. The challenge for Democrats is whether success in primaries translates into success in the general election.

Ohio is looking increasingly red, despite Democrats’ hopes of flipping it blue. At this point, that goal appears to be a long shot.

The irony is hard to miss. California Democrats redrew CA-6 to elect a Democrat. Instead, the state's top-two primary system may send two Republicans Kevin Kiley and Michael Stansfield to the general election. When you engineer the map but forget about vote-splitting, you can get unexpected results. The race hasn't been called, and ballots are still being counted. But it's possible Democrats could be locked out of the general election in a district they redrew to win.

Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner is a growing nightmare for Democrats. Scandals keep piling up in the must-win race. There is a way to replace him. State law allows a primary winner to withdraw by July 13, with party officials able to choose a replacement by July 27. If Democrats want to flip the Senate, Maine is a must-win seat.
