Unfortunately, he ended up with the fewest seats. I wish more voters had considered which leaders had a credible vision for infrastructure, as it impacts opportunities for future generations. K. Annamalai is another leader who has consistently spoken with similar clarity on such issues.

There is an Aerocity proposed for Parandur Airport too. Don't forget the anchor CAPEX investments like the Chennai–Bengaluru Expressway and the HSR bullet train. But Parandur Airport is on hold. Imagine the infrastructure potential with the KTCC region it could attract a shit-ton of high-end investments. @CMOTamilnadu, sir hope you reconsider.

There are indeed many of us from Chennai who genuinely aspire to see the city realize its full potential (Whether we are still based in Chennai or like many of us who have relocated for career and personal reasons, our shared roots keep us deeply invested in seeing the city thrive and achieve its full potential). Unfortunately, decades of messaging have conditioned many to view almost every infrastructure project with suspicion, making balanced discussions difficult. Development doesn’t have to mean destroying nature—it means thoughtfully balancing agriculture, wetlands, the coastal ecosystem, while also building airports, expressways, business districts and modern public infrastructure. Kudos to people like you. It’s encouraging to see outsiders believe in Chennai’s potential and advocate for its growth. Please don’t let a section of the comments discourage you. Many of us appreciate your optimism and hope better sense prevails so Chennai can become the world-class city it has the potential to be!

Good for Bengaluru. Meanwhile, neighbouring Chennai is happy taking the scenic route. Why rush? A second airport at Parandur? Not urgent. A few more years with an overstretched airport, 40-minute cab queues in the heat, and passengers squeezing through an ageing terminal builds character. Expressways? Better to enjoy festive traffic jams crawling out of the city. Competing with Bengaluru or Hyderabad isn’t really the goal anyway. If opportunities keep shifting elsewhere and TN’s youth have to migrate for better jobs, that’s just the “natural course.” We’ll grow at our own pace. “Steady progress” is admirable—unless it quietly turns into accepting decline.

Chennai has good office demand. Latest JLL reports put Chennai's H1 supply at a tight 1.8 million sq ft, while annual net leasing skyrocketed to 7 million sq ft—a massive 187% YoY surge, the fastest among major Indian metros! (Vaguely remember the numbers, need to cross check) Whatever comes up gets taken up immediately. The Govt needs to push and tie up with big private players for fresh supply. Once Grade-A supply lands, absorption will explode. Chennai is already on track to cross the 100 million sq ft stock milestone by the end of the year, closing the gap fast to easily better Pune, Mumbai, and Hyderabad, even if Blr remains a distant leader.

If and when Parandur materialises, we might also get a swanky Aerocity! West Chennai will become the new South Chennai. Waiting with bated breath!

Not exactly i feel , Airside upgrades and rapid exit taxiways have pushed MAA’s capacity to 45 movements/hour—more than enough for midnight clusters. The lack of direct long-haul flights is driven by airline hub strategies and bilateral seat caps, not physical runway limitations. If Chennai had the modern greenfield widebody infrastructure of BLR, the terminals wouldn’t be empty. Foreign airlines actively shift capacity to Bangalore because MAA lacks the necessary international aerobridges and widebody gates, not because of any other reason.

Very good place for Adyar flood plains, can acts as lake as well. Chennai, Kanchi, Chengelpet, dt are full of lakes/rivers. But this proposed mid field terminal is perfect place for @aaichnairport to build world's first water airport terminal on Adyar flood plains.

True, the delays give that overwhelming feeling that it might not happen. But given the massive scale, strong backing from the Centre, industries, and key parties, there's still solid hope. As for demand—it's never dying down in TN. Right now, the lack of direct flights at MAA forces people to transit via BLR/BOM/DEL. It’s just a matter of time before the new airport operates, and Chennaiites + industries will fully maximize it.

The narrative that coastal cities shouldn’t build massive airports due to elevation is a completely flawed argument. Look at the data: Navi Mumbai Airport: 8 meters above sea level Kochi (Nedumbassery) Airport: 9 meters above sea level Bhogapuram Airport (Vizag): ~21 meters above sea level Global economic powerhouses like New York, Singapore, Hong Kong, and San Francisco are all low-lying coastal cities. Did they stop building critical infrastructure? No. They engineered for resilience. While Chennai's economy operates on a different scale than global superpowers, drawing a parallel highlights the universal importance of coastal connectivity. The logic presented in second image of the Original post is an anti-development trap. Chennai is a massive metropolis with a deep legacy, a highly diversified economy, robust industrial manufacturing, and immense cargo potential. We deserve and need an amazing, world-class airport. Defeatist theories shouldn't hold us back. Managing climate adversities through smart engineering will translate into a booming economy and millions of jobs for future generations. ✈️

@SamurayTamilan Appreciate the relocation advice! I’m actually not based in Chennai at the moment, but it’s incredibly good of you to think I need to pack my bags just for wanting the city to grow shoulder-to-shoulder with Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Keep the love coming;

So is the message?: ‘We’ll cancel a once-in-a-generation infrastructure project because some people may have benefited from insider information. Never mind if it impacts the future of millions of young Tamils who may have to move to Bengaluru, Hyderabad, or even abroad for better opportunities.’ Is that really a fair and proportionate approach? Farmers deserve fair compensation and rehabilitation, but why is there so little concern for the lakhs of middle-class, tax-paying youth whose future depends on Chennai attracting investments and high-paying jobs? Thousands have already moved to Bengaluru and Hyderabad due to limited opportunities. Stalling Parandur will only accelerate that trend. What about the people who voted for this government, and those who did not? Are they really happy with the cancellation of Parandur being justified under the guise of punishing Vested interest buyers? The interests of farmers and Tamil Nadu’s youth are equally important. A responsible government should protect both, not pit one against the other. Biggest concern is that this could slow Chennai’s growth for decades. Without world-class infrastructure, investments will go elsewhere, and an entire generation could end up paying the price. Let’s hope some magic happens—with experts stepping in to advise the government and help find a balanced way forward.

Nope, I don’t think so. People still don’t realize what Tamil Nadu lost by shelving the Sriperumbudur airport proposal. If that couldn’t register, how will they understand the long-term impact of cancelling Parandur? By 2036, if Chennai falls further behind, the narrative will simply be “corruption” while everyone praises Bengaluru and Hyderabad—and perhaps even accepts Chennai trailing behind Pune and Ahmedabad as normal.

We’ve been hearing: “Why Chennai? Develop Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy, Tuticorin—or even Hosur instead.” But this isn’t an either-or choice. While this debate drags on, Chennai continues to fall behind. No amount of pushing Tier-2 cities can compensate for a weakening capital. Would anyone argue that projects meant for Madurai or Coimbatore should be shifted to Theni or Namakkal? It’s the same flawed logic. Amidst all these debates, the only clear outcome is that Tamil Nadu keeps losing ground.
