They’re building one of the largest data centres in the UK right next to the M40 at Graven Hill near Bicester and the council just rubber-stamped it. 103,605 square metres. Eight buildings. 435 megawatts of power. That’s enough electricity for 1.4 million homes. Backup diesel generators on standby. They’re selling it with the usual lines: hundreds of permanent jobs, thousands during construction. Progress. The future. The cloud. AI. What they’re not selling is the real cost. Massive energy demand on a grid that’s already under pressure. Serious water use for cooling. Hardly any jobs once construction is completed. Biodiversity impacts on former military land. A flood of local objections that got politely ignored. This isn’t just another planning application. It’s the same pattern we keep seeing. big corporate infrastructure dropped onto a community with glossy promises, while the long-term strain on power, water and the local environment gets waved away as “manageable.” When projects this size lock in that much electricity and water, ordinary people always end up further down the priority list. Bills rise. Resources get tighter. The land and wildlife pay first. By the time the problems become impossible to ignore, the concrete is already poured and the servers are already running. Stay sceptical. Ask who really benefits when this much power and water is quietly ring-fenced. And don’t assume the official reassurances cover everything that matters. Why so we need all these data centres? Whats the link between them and flock cameras? Is this Orwell on steroids? Once these places are built, they don’t get unbuilt. Credit to @ben_toto23
