Fasting……. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus deliberately employs the exact same grammatical structure and authoritative tone when He instructs His disciples on prayer and on fasting: “When you pray…” (Matthew 6:5) and “When you fast…” (Matthew 6:16). He does not say “if you fast,” nor does He soften the command with qualifiers or alternatives. The parallel wording is not accidental; it is a divine declaration that both practices hold equal weight in the eyes of God. Prayer and fasting are twin pillars of intimate communion with the Father—neither is optional, neither is secondary, and neither can be casually dismissed or replaced. God does not distinguish between “spiritual” and “physical” fasting any more than He separates the soul from the body; He simply commands us to fast. This is not cultural suggestion or outdated tradition—it is the clear, unchanging Word of the Lord. Regardless of modern medicine’s warnings, cultural grazing habits, or pulpit quackery that marginalizes the practice, the equality Jesus placed on prayer and fasting stands unmoved. To diminish one is to diminish the other. The Father who sees in secret rewards both with the same promise, because both flow from the same obedient, hungry heart that refuses to live by bread alone.
