BITNAME: A Peer-to-Peer Name-Pegged Stablecoin @bitname_
If a naming blockchain wins, its registration token becomes a stablecoin. Utility floor, dollar-priced mint ceiling, BTC timelocked and returned at maturity.bitname.info GMXJoined June 2013
Every stablecoin that ever held its peg did so because someone promised to redeem it.
That promise is the weak point.
The interesting question is whether anything can be stable without one. 🧐
January 2011: Aaron Swartz publishes a sketch for secure, decentralized, human-readable names built on a Bitcoin-style chain, squaring Zooko's triangle.
Three months later Namecoin ships
One of the quietest and most consequential things he ever posted.
April 18, 2011: Namecoin launches. First fork of Bitcoin's code, first altcoin, first blockchain doing something other than money. Its creator posted as "vinced," shipped it and vanished.
No foundation, no interviews, no return.
Curious, no?
INITIATION OF THE NYMS
=====
A ritual cycle in which the name is the unit of account, and credit is denominated in people.
THE THIRD RITE | RENEWAL
Every seventh year, over a single day, from first light.
WICKED GAME (Chris Isaak) Summer REMIX
Namecoin's founding idea came from Satoshi. In a December 2010 thread about BitDNS he asked: "While you are generating bitcoins, why not also get free domain names for the same work?"
Merged mining was not a clever bolt-on; it was the original pitch.
A network that survived a decade of total irrelevance has demonstrated something no new fork can: it does not require attention to keep running.
Monetary systems are judged by what happens when nobody is watching and Namecoin has the longest record of exactly that.
The chain does not know whether the entry it is securing is a name or a balance. Money is just the application people agree to run on top of a ledger that assigns scarce things to owners.
Everything below that layer is naming.
21 million cap
Four year halving
Bitcoin's codebase
Bitcoin's hashrate
fifteen years of uptime...
The only missing ingredient is belief. Worth asking which item on that list is actually the hard one to manufacture.
Merge mining means a miner never has to choose. Hashpower is not split between chains, it is spent twice. Every argument that a second chain must cannibalize Bitcoin's security quietly stops applying the moment that chain is merge mined.
Merge mining other chains is almost certainly a major part of Bitcoin's future
A protocol with no marketing budget, no influencers, and no price action has one advantage nothing else in this industry can claim: nobody has any incentive left to lie about it.
No foundation shaking a tin cup.
No token sale
no roadmap thread
no conference booth
It just keeps producing blocks...tick tock, next block
Crypto should be more unsettled than it is that the quietest chain in the room is also the oldest one still standing.
Every decentralized identity startup since 2015 has raised money to rebuild something that has been running, unfunded/unmarketed, since 2011
The industry does not reward solving the problem
It rewards announcing it
Namecoin doesn't care for these short-term rewards...
Namecoin is what happens when a technology is correct fifteen years before anyone has a use for it.
The .bit zone is a graveyard of good ideas that may have shipped too early but is ready to be brushed off and worked.
A chain nobody uses but miners still secure is not dead, it is preserved. Namecoin has spent a decade as live infrastructure with an intact ledger and real hashrate. An option like that is worth more in the hour it is needed than in all the years it sits quiet
December 2010: Satoshi tells the BitDNS crowd to build their own chain instead of bloating Bitcoin's. Namecoin was the answer.
Every altcoin, sidechain, and appchain since is a footnote to one piece of advice about what a blockchain should refuse to do.
Namecoin names expire.
Stop renewing and the name returns to the commons.
ICANN lets a squatter sit forever as long as the invoices clear.
Namecoin taxed inattention instead of wealth.
Merge mining is Namecoin's quietest idea. A miner secures it with work they were already doing for Bitcoin, at zero marginal cost. It is the only chain that never asked anyone to choose sides.
Fifteen years of security, borrowed rather than bought.
Zooko's triangle said naming could be human readable, decentralized, or secure: pick two.
Namecoin picked three in 2011 and almost nobody came. The hard problem was never cryptographic. It was convincing people a name should be owned rather than rented.
Fell down the Namecoin rabbit hole this week. Bitcoin's first fork, built to solve naming, merge-mined for security, and basically dormant.
Feels less like a dead project and more like one that showed up about a decade early
Been reading the November 2010 BitDNS threads. Before Namecoin existed, people were arguing about whether a name should be an indivisible object or a divisible coin. They picked divisible, and I think that quiet decision cost them more than anyone realized at the time
