In 1936 the West gave Adolf Hitler the Olympic Games. Not grudging participation. Full hosting rights! Opening ceremony under the swastika. German athletes marching as proud representatives of the Reich while the Nuremberg Laws were already on the books and the first camps were already filled. No one demanded they compete as “Individual Neutral Germans.” No one banned their anthem. The world looked a rising totalitarian power in the face and still handed it the stage. Today the same institutions treat a Russian gymnast like radioactive material. Even when they let the athletes in, the flag is forbidden, the anthem is silenced, the country name is erased. A teenager on the beam is handled as if she carries an invasion force in her leotard. The mere sound of the Russian national anthem is treated as an existential threat. I see this as theatrical fragility. Real power does not flinch at symbols. It defeats the opponent and then lets him compete. Weakness bans the anthem and congratulates itself for courage. The West once absorbed far worse and still kept its nerve. 
Now it is frightened of a melody.

And yet Russian girls are so damn good that they still show up and take the top spots. Then they are denied their flag and anthem. As if that changes anything. Everyone knows these girls are Russian. Everyone knows exactly which country they represent. The West increasingly looks like a pack of desperate, vicious wolves willing to do anything just to bark at a great Russia they hate so much.
