JEREMY GRANTHAM: ELON IS RUNNING THE TESLA PLAYBOOK AT TEN TIMES THE SCALE. Jeremy Grantham just delivered a warning about @elonmusk's next act. His framing starts with how $TSLA actually got built, and the story is far more honest than the legend most investors carry around. Tesla wasn't profitable enough to grow into what it became. There was no traditional path. So Musk did something different. As Grantham put it bluntly, using "BS" as what he called a technical term, Musk talked the stock up to four or five times what it was worth on paper. He sold large blocks of stock at those inflated prices. He used the proceeds to build a gigafactory. Then he kept the narrative running, the stock held in and went up again, and he repeated the cycle. Sale of stock didn't crush the equity because the storytelling kept ahead of the dilution. The combination of confidence-inspiring leadership and a willing market created a self-fulfilling prophecy. The company became worth what Musk insisted it was worth, and the stock eventually went up ten times. Grantham's point isn't that Musk is dishonest. His point is that the Tesla outcome required a very specific combination of factors. An extraordinary bull market. A receptive audience for ambitious narratives. A founder uniquely capable of holding belief together through repeated equity raises. And critically, the timing of the market cycle aligned almost perfectly with Tesla's capital needs over the last six years. SpaceX is now attempting the same playbook at a vastly larger scale. The capital requirements to fund Mars colonization, Starlink expansion, and the broader space economy are orders of magnitude beyond what Tesla needed. The narrative is even bigger. Mining asteroids. AI integrated into every layer of the stack. The story being sold to public market investors is, in Grantham's framing, the most ambitious BS story he has ever seen presented to a public audience. The piece that makes his warning land harder is the historical pattern. He believes this is the classic description of a market peak. The moment when the most ambitious technological narratives in human history get sold to public markets at maximum valuations is exactly what you look for at the top of a terrific bubble. The defining technological imagery of the moment, like Starship being caught by chopsticks, is genuinely magnificent and may explain a meaningful portion of the demand for the IPO. But spectacular imagery and spectacular valuation are not the same thing, and Grantham has spent his career identifying the difference. His broader point is that the bull market conditions that allowed Tesla to repeatedly issue equity at inflated valuations may not exist for SpaceX over the next decade. If the market cycle turns while SpaceX is in the middle of executing on its capital plan, the entire playbook breaks. Without continuous narrative-driven equity raises at premium valuations, the underlying economics have to actually work. And on that question, even Grantham acknowledged, nobody really knows yet. When the most respected bubble identifier in finance is calling something a classic peak signal, the appropriate response isn't dismissal. I can co-sign this. My best friend went to MIT and graduated first in his class for mechanical engineering. He then went on to get his doctorate at MIT in materials engineering. He indicated that the biggest problem at MIT was that everyone wanted to create apps. Meanwhile, he built a company dedicated to developing vapor-deposited polymer coatings for industrial thermal systems. Huge application in power plants, sugar factories, etc. Couldn't get the funding.
