POST OFFICE BANKRUPTED A MAN FOR ASKING FOR HELP 91 TIMES Lee Castleton spent 9 years in the RAF, then worked as a stockbroker in the City. In 2003 he and his wife decided they wanted a slower life for their two young kids. They sold their home and bought a small Post Office branch in Bridlington, on the seafront. Within a year the dream job turned into a nightmare. His accounts started showing losses that made no sense. So he did the responsible thing and called the Horizon helpline. Then he called it again. And again. 91 times in 12 weeks, begging someone to explain where the money was going. Nobody could tell him. The Post Office's answer to being told 91 times that their own system was broken was to audit him, suspend him, and demand he pay back 25,000 pounds he never touched. Castleton had no money left for a lawyer so he represented himself in the High Court, alone, against an organisation with a government sized legal budget. He lost. The Post Office then chased him for 321,000 pounds in legal costs and bankrupted him. That is the reward for reporting a fault 91 times. Bankruptcy. The fallout went well beyond the shop. His kids were bullied at school. His daughter was spat at because people in town assumed her dad was a thief. His wife's health suffered under the strain. All because a computer system got the maths wrong and nobody at the top wanted to admit it. In 2019 Castleton was one of over 550 former postmasters who won a group settlement of 58 million pounds. He personally received 20,000 pounds, a rounding error next to what the case cost him. He was even locked out of a mediation scheme the Post Office ran for people who believed they had been wrongly pursued. Years later former Post Office chief executive Paula Vennells told the Horizon IT Inquiry under oath that Castleton's treatment was unforgivable. She also said she had likely signed off on the 300,000 pound bill that ruined him. Unforgivable is one word for it. There are others. Castleton is now suing the @PostOffice and @fujitsu_uk for up to 8 million pounds, arguing the original 2007 judgment against him was obtained by fraud. In May 2026 the Court of Appeal ruled his case should be heard as one trial instead of being split into pieces designed to bury it in cost and delay. A small win. Nearly two decades late. He wanted a quieter life running a post office by the sea. Instead he became one of the clearest examples of what happens when an institution would rather bankrupt an innocent man than admit its software was broken. 🤔 Louise Haigh is still not being honest. “I made a mistake 13 years ago… I was mugged and mistakenly said my work phone was stolen.” No. You did not “mistakenly” say it. You pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation. You deliberately reported your work phone as stolen to Aviva so they would issue you a new one. That is what the court record says. That is what you admitted to. Calling it a simple mistake after all these years is just another version of the same dishonesty. A spent conviction does not rewrite what happened. It does not turn a deliberate false representation into an innocent error. And it certainly does not entitle you to demand a “second chance” at the highest levels of government while you continue to soft-pedal the facts. You resigned as Transport Secretary in 2024 when this became public. Andy Burnham then brought you straight back as First Secretary of State. That is not accountability. If after more than a decade you still cannot be honest and describe your own fraud without watering it down, you have no business anywhere near the levers of power.

A month ago, I was driving though Sussex at 30 mph. A Ford Transit van travelling at about 50 mph on my side of the road suddenly filled my windscreen. With about a second or so before head-on impact, I forced the car to the left and was struck heavily on the driver's side. Happily, I drive a Volvo. Almost any other car and I would not be typing now. The van driver, without checking for injury to me or damage to my car, then sped off and left the scene of the accident. The incident was witnessed another driver who set off in pursuit to get the details of the van and driver. I checked for any injuries and damage to the mechanical functioning of the car and followed him. We caught up with the van driver a mile and a half away, in slow traffic and convinced him to hand over his details. I reported this incident fully to @sussex_police. They apparently consider dangerous driving and leaving the scene of a serious accident 'anti-social driving' and, so far, no action or statements have been taken, from the witness or me. This surely cannot be right. How on earth are we expecting to deter and prevent this sort of potentially lethal behaviour, if these incidents are not subjected to the full rigour of the law?

🚨🚨 BREAKING NEWS: Animal rights campaigner, Anneka Svenska, was visited at home by two police officers and told to accept a police record, attend an “online thinking” course, or face arrest following comments she made on social media about the incineration of beagles at a company that breeds the dogs for use in medical research. The police alleged that she had committed a crime under the Online Safety Act. Anneka refused to accept this “community resolution disposal”, which would have remained on her police record, and, after she engaged a lawyer, the case has now been dropped. Section 179 of the Online Safety Act was introduced by the last Conservative Government and made it a crime, punishable by up to 51 weeks in prison, to knowingly spread false information likely to cause harm. While the Bill was going through Parliament, the FSU warned it might be weaponised in this way to silence legitimate political speech. Anneka doesn’t believe the information she spread about the company was false. In fact, she has documentary evidence which she says substantiates her claims. Until the Online Safety Act was passed, the company unhappy about comments like this would have had to bring a defamation claim in the civil courts. Now, it seems, hurty words online can quickly become a police matter – and it seems that companies are now making criminal complaints as part of their brand protection strategies. If you are visited by the police for a speech matter, we’d urge you to take specialist legal advice before accepting any form of caution or submitting to a re-education course. Members of the Free Speech Union can ask for our help if they find themselves in a similar situation.

But she wasn’t in power long enough to crash the economy. GDP was untouched by her thankfully brief tenure. And, of course, yields on 10-year gilts are now even higher than when they peaked during the ClusterTruss.
