Happy Birthday to a man who was Man of the Match in the semifinal and Final of the 1983 world cup and some one who has a batting average of 55, 57 & 54 in Australia, Pakistan and Westindies respectively. Remember he played in an era when Westindies were at their peak powers with their pacers ruling the world and Australia and Pakistan also had some of the most feared bowlers. Mohinder Amarnath's name immediately calls up the mood and temper of Test cricket in the late 70s and early 80s, of ferocious fast bowlers and of brave struggles vs short-pitched bowling. A rare Indian batsman partial to the hook, Amarnath was struck on the head numerous times by the short-pitched ball. In the season of 1982-83, he worked out a new, open stance to help him play the short ball better, and proceeded to make over a 1,000 runs vs the pace barrage of Pakistan and West Indies. At Barbados he hooked three sixes in his first-innings 91, was struck on the mouth by Malcolm Marshall early in his second innings, washed out his bloodied shirt himself, and returned to make 80. PRITILATA WADDEDAR: 21 YEARS OF LIFE. ONE EXTRAORDINARY FINAL NIGHT. #HistoryTheyNeverTaught She was brilliant enough to study at Eden College in Dhaka and Bethune College in Calcutta. She became a schoolteacher and later headmistress. But behind that quiet exterior was a revolutionary. Her name was Pritilata Waddedar. Born in Chittagong on 5 May 1911, Pritilata grew up in a modest family. Her father worked as a clerk in the Chittagong municipality. By her early twenties, she had entered the underground revolutionary movement led by Masterda Surya Sen. The British were looking for her. A police lookout notice published in the Bengal Criminal Intelligence Gazette in July 1932 carried two photographs of Pritilata and instructed authorities to keep a special lookout for her. The notice even described the 21 year old woman they were hunting as: "short, ugly in appearance." History would remember her rather differently. On 24 September 1932, Masterda entrusted Pritilata with one of the most dangerous operations of the Chittagong revolutionary movement. The target was the Pahartali European Club. It represented the racial exclusiveness of colonial society, a club where Indians were not welcome. Pritilata was given command of the attacking group. She was just 21. The revolutionaries attacked the club with firearms and explosives. Pritilata was wounded during the operation. But she had gone there knowing what capture could mean. She carried potassium cyanide. Rather than allow herself to be captured by the British, Pritilata swallowed it. She died that night. She was 21 years old. What makes the story even more extraordinary is what was reportedly found among her papers afterwards. An English article in her own handwriting titled: "Long Live The Revolution." In it she wrote about women refusing to remain in the background and about accepting the responsibility Masterda had placed upon her. She had gone into the operation knowing that she might not return. Fifteen days later, on Bijoya Dashami, Masterda Surya Sen wrote an extraordinary tribute to her. He remembered the: "faultless, pure, beautiful image of Pritilata." He wrote that he had placed a weapon in one of her hands and "nectar" in the other before sending her towards almost certain death. And then came perhaps his most moving line. He wrote that in all those fifteen days, he had been unable to forget her. There was another deeply human chapter in Pritilata's short life. Nirmal Sen. Nirmal was one of Masterda's closest revolutionary comrades. Pritilata appears to have formed a profound emotional attachment to him, although describing it simply as a romantic relationship would go beyond what the surviving evidence allows us to say. In June 1932, British forces surrounded the revolutionaries' shelter at Dhalghat. A gun battle followed. Nirmal Sen was mortally wounded. Pritilata later wrote about hearing his agonising cries and desperately wanting to go to him. She wondered what he might have said to her if only she could have been beside him during those final moments. She never got that chance. Nirmal died in June. Three months later, Pritilata was dead too. She lived only 21 years. Student. Teacher. Headmistress. Revolutionary. And the young woman chosen by Masterda Surya Sen to lead men into one of the most daring operations of the Chittagong revolutionary movement. He once bowled an U17 side out for just 7 runs, taking 6 wickets for 4(7 batters dismissed for duck). He had already got the better of India's own Vaibhav Sooryavanshi at Under19 level 2 years before this. Now he is sitting on 49 T20I wickets with economy of 5.02, average of 12.87, numbers that don't really belong to a teenager from a cricketing nation ranked 41st in the world. He is just 1 wicket away from 50 T20I wickets & he is still not old enough to vote in most countries. Japan built this on artificial Flicx pitches laid over baseball outfields, on diaspora kids finding their way home through cricket instead of away from it. Hara-Hinze just gave that whole project its proof at Sano, against the best T20I team on earth.

did my B.Tech at IIT Bombay and my PhD at IIT Delhi. I've been a professor for 14 years now. In 22 years of watching the IIT/IIIT system closely, I have never once witnessed a teacher discriminate against a student on the basis of caste. During my B.Tech, most of us had no idea what caste our batchmates belonged to. Many of my close friends were SC/ST. We never discussed it. It never entered any conversation or decision. Not once. Our exposure to the humanities department was limited, though — the term "Brahmanical patriarchy" didn't even exist back then. As a teacher, I don't ask a student's name before solving their doubt. Often I don't know their name at all — some of my classes have 300+ students. We treat them all the same. So does every colleague I know. So did every professor who taught me. Social media has now filled vulnerable students' heads with a lot of manufactured grievance about caste discrimination that, in my experience, doesn't exist.
