الشعب المسيحي الذي لا يقوم بمهمّته الأولى في هذا العالم؛ التبشير بقيامة الربّ يسوع؛ هو شعب ميت روحياً، وسيموت جسداً عاجلاً أم آجلاً. ولنكن صادقين مع أنفسنا: شعوب المشرق المسيحية لم تندثر بسبب الإسلام في المقام الأول. الإسلام كان الظرف، لا السبب. اندثرت لأنها ماتت روحياً أوّلاً؛ لأنها كفّت عن القيام بواجبها الأوحد؛ أن تحمل رسالة القيامة إلى من حولها. ولست أنظّر. أنا نشأت في لبنان. جيراني مسيحيون، أصدقائي مسيحيون، زملائي في العمل مسيحيون؛ ولا أذكر أن واحداً منهم، يوماً واحداً، بشّرني بالربّ يسوع. شعبٌ بهذا الصمت ليس مضطهَداً. هو منطفئ. والمنطفئ لا يحتاج عدوّاً ليزول.
