Shame on the Associated Press for using politicized and misleading wording when referring to the Armenian Genocide. In its headline, AP wrote that Israel “moves to formally recognize Armenian WWI deaths as a genocide,” avoiding the proper term: the Armenian Genocide. This wording reduces the systematic extermination of 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman Empire to vague “WWI deaths,” echoing the language of denial and minimization. When reporting on genocide recognition, language matters. The Armenian Genocide must be named clearly and accurately — not softened, obscured, or politically sanitized.

Yerevan authorities have erased a mural honoring Haykaz Mkrtchyan, who defended Armenia during Azerbaijan's July 2020 attack on Tavush and later gave his life in the 2020 Artsakh War. The mural, located in the underpass of the Armenian State University of Economics, is the latest memorial dedicated to a fallen Armenian soldier to disappear from public space, fueling concerns about the gradual erasure of the generation that fought and died defending Armenia and Artsakh. Haykaz took part in the defense of Tavush during the July 2020 clashes and later joined the front lines during the 2020 Artsakh War. He was wounded in battle and ultimately gave his life defending the homeland. He is buried at Yerablur Military Pantheon. Supporters of the removal point to municipal regulations governing murals and graffiti, arguing that public artwork requires official approval. However, the removal of Haykaz Mkrtchyan's mural cannot be viewed in isolation. In recent years, memorials, murals, and public tributes dedicated to those who fought and died defending Armenia and Artsakh have increasingly disappeared from public spaces. While authorities may cite administrative procedures, the result is the steady disappearance of visible reminders of a generation that carried the burden of war and made the ultimate sacrifice. This process has unfolded alongside years of rhetoric from Pashinyan directed at Artsakh, the Artsakh movement, and the displaced Armenians of Artsakh. Since the loss of Artsakh, Pashinyan has repeatedly argued that Armenia must move beyond the logic of the Artsakh movement and has made remarks that many Artsakh Armenians view as dismissive of their struggle, sacrifice, and displacement. Against that backdrop, the removal of memorials dedicated to fallen soldiers carries significance beyond questions of municipal procedure. For many Armenians, these murals are not simply public artwork. They are memorials that preserve the names, faces, and stories of those who fought and died defending the homeland. Haykaz Mkrtchyan's mural was a reminder of a young Armenian who stood in defense of his country and ultimately gave his life for it. Today, that reminder has been erased from the wall where it once stood. The concern many Armenians express is not that a mural was removed. It is that, piece by piece, the public memory of the generation that fought for Armenia and Artsakh is being removed with it.
