@lauralaban My 2 cents is that without the "algorithm" mastodon is stuck showing you just the people you follow in mostly sequential order. However, with all of musk's tweaks to the twitter algorithm since he took over, I think it's arguably no better that a straight sequential feed now.

Confession: I was too lazy to bother learning LaTeX so I just installed the Computer Modern typeface (the default LaTeX font) and created a Word template to match the common LaTeX style so I could get that stolen LaTeX valour😳

@chr1sa Fine to point out that the times didn't write up the story as a major win, but it's not like they outright lied and had to pay a $787 million I'm sorry fee over it. We watched it live and it did blow up before stage 2 (even without reading the times article.)

@AstroKatie As a university employee I went to a few seminars that offered bottled water and cookies for snacks. They put out a donation bucket as their way of dealing with this. All the code I wrote at the university was open-source, and I never put a dollar in the donation bucket!

@tomgara @chr1sa I saw 3 pretty clear groups in the people I follow: those that leaned into the new musk culture (true believers), those that were outraged, left, but came back a week later and still post here (human nature), and those that wandered away to other places (true anti-believers.)

@chr1sa @tomgara My lesson from all of this is that (1) it's almost impossible to forcibly create new social communities, (2) it's almost impossible to kill existing social communities. They achieve a life and culture of their own and only a few will thrive.

@chr1sa @tomgara Don't take this the wrong way, but that sounds like a lot of overlap with the "elon musk" bubble which I assume is alive an strong here. :-) For me, twitter has felt very disjointed with a lot of interesting people moving on and the algorithm often coming up with some real duds.
