Enterprise, as we well know, is based on that legendary aircraft carrier USS Enterprise CV-6, known worldwide as the "Grey Ghost" or "Big E" after having been considered sunk on many occasions by the Japanese Empire, only for it to be discovered that the ship was still afloat. The incredible resilience she demonstrated after surviving numerous battles until the end of World War II made her the most decorated ship of that period and in the history of the U.S. Navy, and also the only one of the Yorktown class not to be sunk.
In the game, Enterprise is presented to us as a girl who is quite devoted to her duty, to the point that she seems rather obsessed with it. One of Enterprise’s most striking traits is that she appears incapable of conceiving an identity outside of war. She fights because she believes it is the only thing she must do, believing that she has an “impossible debt” to repay and that she must pay it with her last breath on the battlefield for all those she has seen fall.
Although the game never tells us that Enterprise suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or Survivor’s Syndrome, much of her characterization seems built around symptoms and behaviors that strongly recall those conditions.
The real Enterprise survived virtually the entire Pacific War while watching countless comrades-in-arms disappear. In a way, Azur Lane takes that historical experience and transforms it into a psychological burden for her characterization.
The Battle of Midway is probably the most important event for understanding Enterprise. Historically, the USS Yorktown (CV-5), her sister ship, was sunk after the battle, while the USS Enterprise (CV-6) survived and continued fighting for the rest of the war.
In Azur Lane, the loss of Yorktown has an enormous emotional impact on Enterprise, especially because Yorktown entrusts her with her eagle, not only so that she will look after it in her place, but also because it functions as a metaphor, handing her the baton so that she may continue in the name of the Yorktown class.
The idea that Yorktown fell while she continued onward fits perfectly with the logic of survivor's syndrome: "Why was she sunk and not me?"
People who suffer from this phenomenon often experience an irrational sense of guilt for having survived. Although they objectively bear no responsibility for the deaths of others, they feel they must justify their own survival through sacrifice, work, or suffering.
That description fits Enterprise quite well.
This is important because Enterprise rarely shows personal pride in her achievements. Despite being the most famous heroine of the Eagle Union and widely recognized by her comrades and shipgirls from other factions, her victories do not seem to give her satisfaction.
For Enterprise, war and winning battles are not a source of glory; they are an obligation.
Another element that recalls psychological trauma is her inability to rest.
In numerous moments in the game and especially in some of her early skins, Enterprise shows some degree of discomfort in everyday or peaceful situations. When she is not fighting, she seems lost, without direction, or unsure exactly how she should react to situations so far removed from the battlefield.
This can be read as a form of emotional avoidance. A traumatized person sometimes takes refuge in constant activity because stopping means confronting painful memories. As long as she is fighting, Enterprise does not have to think about Yorktown, the losses suffered, or the cost of the war. Battle becomes a form of distraction for her so that she does not have to deal with those emotions.
I believe these themes are captured especially well in two of her voice lines:
"Commander, tell me. How many more do I have to sink?"
"It's one battle after another, huh..."
It does not sound like someone eager to fight, but like someone trapped in an endless obligation.
The phrasing and the tone Enterprise uses sounds less like a soldier asking for more enemies to shoot down and more like someone asking when the burden she carries on her back will end.
Now then, there is an important element that will help Enterprise overcome her own inner demons and reintegrate mentally with society and her comrades, and that element is none other than the Commander.
Within the world of Azur Lane, the Commander acts as a neutral authority who intervenes among the various factions in the game, so it is common for many shipgirls to turn to him to share concerns or problems they do not wish to tell anyone else.
This is especially evident with Enterprise, because otherwise, how do you explain that someone as reserved as Enterprise shows herself so vulnerable in his presence, as we can see in some of her interactions?
"All the lights in the sky are stars, just as all the lights on the seas are enemies... Commander, will there be a day where there's no more fighting?"
"I carry with me the hopes and wills of the countless battlefields and goodbyes that I have experienced. Commander, are you prepared to shoulder them all? …I see. Then let us walk together until the end of our lives".
After spending time with him and finding a refuge where she can expose her most vulnerable points, Enterprise gradually manages to lift that weight from her shoulders, processing those negative emotions and feelings and allowing them to flow instead of burying them deep down, understanding that she does not have to carry everything alone and blame herself for events that were beyond her control.
This is particularly well reflected in her voice line when affinity with the character reaches its maximum state prior to marriage:
“What do you want to do after the war? --Me? I'll probably stick with you. I feel the safest out of battle when I'm with you. Will you... take me along with you?”
Enterprise no longer limits herself to talking about the battlefield; she imagines a life outside of it together with the Commander when this conflict is finally brought to an end.
I consider that this change is especially evident after the release of her "Bon Voyage" skin, which coincidentally was launched in the game in the same year that the UR version of Yorktown was released, Yorktown with her Type II rigging after awakening from a five-year coma.
The coincidence with Yorktown's return hardly seems like a coincidence from a narrative perspective, even though the skin was released prior to Yorktown II.
When Yorktown returns, one of the greatest emotional wounds associated with Midway disappears, for over the years Yorktown had been the physical representation of everything she had lost.
It does not erase all of her trauma, but it does eliminate a fundamental source of guilt and pain upon seeing her beloved sister in good form, healthy, and ready to return to the battlefield alongside her, her sister Hornet, the Commander, and the rest of her comrades.
In the skins released afterward (including the Bon Voyage skin itself) Enterprise appears far more relaxed and at ease in everyday situations, whether on a trip, enjoying the summer, or unwinding at a spa. It feels as though her sister's return, the steady support of her comrades over time, and especially the Commander’s psychological and emotional presence during her most vulnerable moments have finally helped her step out of her shell and begin truly enjoying life.
Enterprise herself acknowledges that thanks to the Commander presence, she can finally relax and enjoy life instead of being bound by those chains she imposed on herself; being alonside the Commander is all she needs to enjoy the present and walk toward the tomorrow that she once denied herself because she was trapped in the past.

📣 Just added to our Homecoming 250 event line-up!
Join us on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 3:00pm for the unveiling ceremony of the stern plate from the legendary aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CV-6). Transported from River Vale, NJ, this historic artifact will now be displayed on a custom-built base on the Battleship’s pier.
Enterprise was the most decorated ship of WWII—and now, you can be part of honoring her legacy 🎟️ The unveiling ceremony is free and open to the public!
I feel such a weird mix of unease and vindication; I am sorry to SKKs whose ships get the senseless ero-fication treatment, then I look back at my own ship and realize it doesn't have to be this way.
How many years have passed yet she still remains poised & dignified.
