Prof. Hadiza Nuhu, an associate professor of pharmacy at Ahmadu Bello University, has developed Herb 25, an anti-malaria herbal drug registered by NAFDAC. The drug, developed after 12 years of research, is described as an enhanced ethnomedical preparation from herbs traditionally used in Nigeria to treat malaria. Herb 25 is formulated for chloroquine-resistant malaria and is dispensed in tea bags for easy preparation with hot water. University officials said it is the first anti-malaria drug of its kind to be produced by a Nigerian university. Nuhu, a senior lecturer in the Department of Pharmacognosy and Drug Development, holds a Ph.D. from ABU. She is also a member of the Nigerian Society of Pharmacognosy and research director of the Association of Commonwealth Traditional Medicine Practitioners, West Africa.

Nigeria initially had 5 and a half working days. Monday to Friday. Then Saturday was half-day. Sunday was a rest day. This changed in 1972, under General Yakubu Gowon. This was due to lobbying by the Seventh-Day Adventists. To them, their Sabbath Day was Saturday, and not Sunday like the rest of Christendom. That concession was given. No drama, no gaslighting. Imagine stressing out Adventists so much, they have to go to through the courts for over 15 years before they can establish unfair standards. Now, country-wide examinations have been put on Jummah times (1-3). Yet, when Muslims complain about those timings, they are told they called troublemakers, when the timetable simply didn't take them into consideration. In these times, some of the most hypocritical responses have been retorts like "Go to another school where hijab is allowed". Anyone who is a frequent reader of news knows how much Hijab-wearing students and females have faced stiff opposition, moreso from people of their same Yoruba stock. Nor does it take into account those who use advantage of being in public service to take advantage of it and try and dominate and bully others. How many exclusive Government secondary schools run morning assemblies devotion. It was Kadara High School, Lagos where Aisha Alabi was beaten 43 strokes by the Principal U.C Ukpaka for wearing Hijab. Barira Tajudeen of Mafoluku High School in SS3, was suspended, from pending WAEC exams by the then principal, Elizabeth Omidele, for wearing Hijab. Olatunji Salau Hawaw was denied an interview at the Federal Medical Centre Ebute-Metta, for wearing Hijab. The National Industrial Court had to describe it as discriminatory. Olayinka Oladunjoye, the Commissioner of Education, then boldly declared Hijab was banned in Lagos. In 2015, EKITI SIEC banned Hijab-wearing women from the local elections! What we have are intolerant people who don't want to see any Muslim identity in Public schools, Polytechnics, Hospitals and public places, talkless of Private spaces. Let me now address one pernicious dare being thrown around. "Leave ISI and go elsewhere". It is an unthinking dare that assumes the grounds they are on is rock solid. Dr Lateef Adegbite had to intervene in the case of LIAD TELLA, former National Editor of Concord, when he was a student of Baptist High School, Iwo. He, as Attorney- General of Western State, got the Ministry of Education to warn that no student may be compelled to take up a religion other than that of his parents. UNILAG ISL allows Hijabs according to their regulations and this has never been an issue. UNILAG however has had 4 Muslims as Vice Chancellors. Saburi Biobaku, Nurudeen Alao, Jelili Omotola, Rahman Ade-Bello. UI and OAU for example have never had a single Muslim Vice-Chancellor. Since 1948, and 1962. Even when Professors from these schools have gone on to be VC's in other Universities. Do you see how uncomfortable this is going? This stupid dare is how random positions become subject of politics and quota, because people cannot trust those in administrative positions will eschew prejudice in their functions. They will then start demanding religious balance in allocation of positions in University and Civil service. Is that not how we ended up with the Quota System because people couldn't trust others to discharge duties fairly without resort to ethnicity or religion. Those demands and changes started from simple simple dares like this.

In Riyadh, a man saw a dream: a person told him, Call this number and arrange Umrah for so-and-so. The number was crystal clear. He woke up, remembered every detail, but dismissed it as a mere illusion and forgot about it. The next night, the exact same dream returned. On the third night, it came again. This time, he went to the imam of his local mosque and narrated the dreams. The imam advised: "If you see it once more, note the number carefully, contact the person, and fulfill this command." The third night, the dream repeated. The next morning, he dialed the number. After a brief introduction, he said: "Brother, I have been commanded in a dream three times to take you for Umrah. I wish to fulfill this good deed." The man on the other end burst into loud laughter. "Umrah?! I haven’t even prayed my obligatory prayers in years! I’m a drinker. You want to take *me* for Umrah?" The dreamer insisted with sincerity and humility. He offered to bear every single expense. After much persuasion, the man finally agreed on one condition: "I’ll go, but you must bring me back to Riyadh and cover all costs." When they finally met, the dreamer was taken aback. The man looked rough clearly a heavy drinker who rarely prayed. His appearance screamed negligence in faith. Yet they traveled together to Makkah. They performed ghusl, entered Ihram, and reached the Haram. They made Tawaf of the Ka’bah, prayed two rak’ahs at Maqam Ibrahim, performed Sa’i between Safa and Marwah, shaved their heads, and completed Umrah. As they were about to leave the Haram, the man said: "Before we leave, I want to pray two rak’ahs of nafl. Who knows if my Umrah was even accepted?" The dreamer had no objection. "Pray with full devotion," he said. The man began praying. When he went into sujood (prostration), he stayed there longer and longer. After some time, his companion called him. No response. He touched him and realized his soul had departed in that very sujood. The dreamer wept with envy. "What a beautiful death! Husn-e-Khatimah. How I wish my end could be like this!" The man was given ghusl with Zamzam water, dressed in Ihram, and his funeral prayer was led in the Haram. Hundreds of thousands of Muslims prayed for him. Later, his body was taken back to Riyadh as promised and buried there. A few days later, the dreamer called the deceased man’s widow to offer condolences. He asked: "Tell me, what good deed did your husband do that earned him such an honorable death dying in sujood inside the Haram?" The widow replied with painful honesty: My husband was not a good man. He had abandoned prayer and fasting long ago. He was addicted to alcohol the bottle was often by his bedside. But there was one habit… In our neighborhood lived a very poor widow with small children. Every night when my husband went to the market to buy food for our family, he would also buy food for her and her orphans. He would quietly place it at her door and call out, 'I’ve left food for you please take it.' That widow would pick up the food and always pray for him: (O Allah, grant him a good end!) Allah accepted her prayer. Dear readers, never forget the hadith of the Prophet PBUH: "Acts of kindness protect a person from an evil death." A small, consistent good deed done quietly even by a flawed man became the reason for his magnificent end. May Allah grant us all husn-e-khatimah a beautiful ending. This is a true incident from Saudi Arabia, recorded in books of genuine spiritual events. A powerful reminder that no good deed is ever wasted in the sight of Allah.
