Bottom line: Much more research on consciousness is needed.
1/ Interesting (long) post on AI consciousness, which makes some good points. But there are (it seems to me) many misconceptions too. What AI folk think about consciousness is important, so let's have a look 👀
Is DMT dangerous? Yes, in two ways: 1) it's an epistemological hand grenade, and all things being equal (which rarely are!) taking DMT makes people less rational and discerning. 2) it can trigger intensely negatively valenced states of consciousness (e.g. being tortured by clown beings). These things are true, and I will never deny them (unless I'm convinced otherwise somehow). That said, I strongly believe based on a lot of evidence that some people can massively benefit from DMT, that some people can take enormous amounts of DMT and become more informed and rational as an effect (even if is rare), that for many DMT tends to be deeply blissful and pleasant most of he time, and that DMT states of consciousness are computationally non-trivial, incredibly significant for understanding consciousness, and mathematically relevant. This all warrants doing research with the substance, and a lot of it. Even if, contra many in the psychedelic movement today, I don't see it *as* healing and safe as other psychedelic (-inspired) therapies.

If active ingredient in "psychedelic therapy" is the skill of the psychotherapist, WHY do researchers & media always focus on the drug? Because the drug is something proprietary to market & sell at scale. Even if all benefits are due to therapy, focus will ALWAYS be on the drug.
No. *Psychotherapy* (talking, understanding, processing in the context of a meaningful therapy relationship) alleviates PTSD symptoms. MDMA may (or may not) facilitate the therapy work for some people some of the time. The active ingredient is quality psychotherapy, not the drug.
The #NIH and #FDA should not only be supporting research into new psychedelic therapies, but should also reduce the barriers to researching existing psychedelic therapies that have been evolving largely underground for the past half century. #psychedelics

It’s hard to believe that psychedelic drug development will be any different if it occurs within the existing pharmaceutical system, unless there is industry-wide collaboration and regulatory intervention to mitigate patent abuse.

Agreed. The Controlled Substances Act is bananas. Not scientifically based. We need good regulation (like assuring purity of products for sale & lots of public education). But the concept of forbidding these compounds like nuclear material & criminalizing use is foolish & cruel.
Abolish the federal drug scheduling system. Full stop. No incremental reforms. It cannot be reformed. It is a political sledgehammer built to smash people. It has no basis in science or medicine, but in bludgeoning. That’s its nature.
