Spoke on a panel at @bitcoindayio this wknd in Tampa, my alma mater. The place where I lost myself completely to drugs and alcohol and then also found myself again by getting sober in 2008. It’s always interesting for me to return to the place that holds a memory of me that feels like an entirely different life. Sometimes I think about what would’ve happened had I not gotten a wake up call all those years ago to quit drinking alcohol, stop living with anxiety and step into a better life for myself. I don’t talk about my sobriety online like I used to, but this weekend I was reminded that it is the foundation and cornerstone for all of the success that I have in my life. On the panel I was on this weekend I was asked how my passions and values play a role in what I do for work now in the Bitcoin space. Two of my top values in life are freedom and experiences. In this moment, I was reminded that I experienced my own personal freedom back in 2008 when I realize that everything we’ve been taught and shown about alcohol is a lie. I broke free from those chains and it was the first step into a life of true freedom, non-conformity, and going against the grain of what society tells you you’re “supposed” to do. Since then, I never looked back and intentionally built a life on my own terms. It led me down a path of truly experiencing life above the influence, fully present in every moment, and shaped me into who I am today. If I kept drinking and doing drugs I would probably be dead, no lie. But instead, I’m speaking on stages, traveling the world, and not only having experiences for myself, but creating high-end experiences for other people @TheBitcoinConf. Not only am I in the room with successful people, I’m curating those spaces and connections. That’s the beautiful thing about choices: the network effects. I couldn’t be more grateful for that day back in 2008 when I prayed for help to stop living in groundhog day. I knew there was something bigger and better ahead, but I had no idea how good it could get. All this is to say, if you’re in a place that doesn’t feel right for you — just know you’re always only one decision away from an entirely different life. 🫶🏻🧡

The price of success is hate. The price of authenticity is being disliked. The price of improving yourself is loneliness.

Growth hurts. It always has. The caterpillar doesn't gently become a butterfly, it dissolves completely in the cocoon. Total breakdown before breakthrough. I watched this when I was in the NFL. To reach the next level, you had to kill who you were at the previous one. The habits that got you to college wouldn't work in the pros. The mindset that dominated high school became a liability in the league. Same with Bitcoin. I couldn't just add it to my traditional portfolio. I had to let go of everything the financial advisors taught me. Had to kill the "diversified investment" identity and become something new. People want transformation without turbulence. Want the butterfly without the dissolution. Want the new life without the death of the old one. It doesn't work that way. The systems serving you today will constrain you tomorrow. The identity that carried you here will limit you there. The beliefs that created your current reality will prevent your next one. Fire burns away what's no longer needed so what's essential can emerge. It's life making space for what wants to be born. Most people abort the process when the shaking starts. Run back to familiar patterns instead of pushing through to what's possible. Choose the comfort of limitation over the chaos of transformation. But champions know: everything you want lives on the other side of everything you fear to lose.
