Federal kratom update: DEA’s temporary Schedule I order for mitragynine pseudoindoxyl (MGPI), MGM-15 and MGM-16 took effect today. DOJ also announced limited enforcement discretion but not legal exemption for incidental trace MGPI in otherwise botanical kratom. Link to our news update below.

So is mitragynine an opioid? Scientifically, yes. It activates the mu opioid receptor and has definitive opioid-like activity. But it's clearly not an opiate and shouldn't be lumped together with strong triple opioid agonists such as heroin or fentanyl and stigmatized as such.

The inability to activate all three opioid receptors simultaneously gives mitragynine a significantly better safety profile than classical opiates. Kratom was used as an herbal medicine and recreationally for hundreds of years in Southeast Asia before government intervention.
