My concern is we are not taking advantage of this abundant cheap labor to build up an industrial base to create a large middle class. We are facing premature deindustrialization as we are moving towards services without a strong industrial base.

Economies go through a labor intensive phase, when labor is cheap and capital is scarce, during which you can take advantage to build a strong industrial base. As people become richer, they put money in the economy and capital becomes abundant to fund more advanced production.

I’ve been thinking about how relatively low labour costs in many African economies can reduce the incentive to innovate. If it’s cheaper to hire someone than to automate a process, the business case for building or even paying for technology becomes weaker.

They arrested Malami, who served as a minister for only eight years, and have already confiscated 48 properties. They also arrested El-Rufai, who served as a director for four years, a minister for four years, and a governor for eight years, yet they haven’t confiscated even a pen. I am neither a fool nor blind. El-Rufai has said investigators have spoken to people who worked with him and have used every means at their disposal to find evidence against him. Yet, to this day, they haven’t produced any. Say what you will about the man, but if he says he isn’t a thief, you have no basis to call him a liar. I haven’t seen a Nigerian politician who held offices of that magnitude and has been this difficult to implicate in corruption.

@Lonnewulff I wouldn't be so quick to equate a failed startup with incompetence. Most startups fail by default, even in Silicon Valley, over 60% fail. Unless there's evidence he stole or mismanaged funds, his startup's failure alone doesn't mean he'll be incompetent as Commissioner.

@MSIngawa Try @amanhmong if you're looking for an ethical (Islamic finance based) alternative to conventional HMO. Packages far better than other HMOs too. Organizations may even get a cash back when the insurance pool has a surplus.
