@mellowfish And even that was a retread. My original claim was circa 2022 saying "We're certain there's no way an AI can ever safely drive a car. Our grandkids will say 'can you believe grandpa operated a 2-ton death machine by hand?!'" Grandkids. Shockingly wrong on timescales, indeed.
I publicly made a call a while back that by 2027 we will have moved from "how could you ever trust this to an AI?!? It's finances!", and instead we'll be saying "can you believe that guy tried to write FINANCE code BY HAND?!?" I also claimed that every time I make a claim like that, I end up being shockingly wrong on how long it didn't take.
@mellowfish That's not from SC, that one actually happened IRL, just yesterday. We came down to "we're not sure which direction business wants this, but deleting them is lossy so a really expensive error to make. We're asking Biz, but keeping them for now, since THAT fix is 1 line of SQL.
Related: if I discard a user who created an invoice, and invoice.creator_id is 42 but creator is discarded, should invoice.creator be nil (Rails standard) or still reference a discarded user? It depends HUGELY. If they're sales users and we're calculating commissions, deleting them might change our financial in a spectacularly illegal way. If we're offering the team lead a dropdown of candidates for MVP this week, including them is clearly an error. Past tense receipts vs. future tense directives decide that one.
Oh, absolutely. And your answer isn't wrong. Arguably, without additional context (which I was deliberately withholding) your answer is the better one. We've got some interns in the Skills Clinic and the point was to teach them to think past the knee-jerk "don't bother". First to general discipline rules ("Yes!") and from there to "what is the why of this data, and the why of discarding it, and the why of backfilling it".
Had a great Skills Clinic today. CW wrote a database backfill to update some old data. 172 records were soft-deleted (deleted_at not null). Should that data be backfilled?
We actually decided "no" for a wildly different answer: 1. the backfill had already been run, 2. running a new backfill was very expensive, 3. the backfill only applies to kept records, 4. there's no flow for undiscarding--it acts like a hard delete, and 5. the data wasn't critical and having it be wrong was cheaper than doing it again. I freely concede that 4 could change which could affect 3, but more importantly, I even more freely concede that 1,2 and 5 are "this is how the sausage is made, kids" 🤣

@techbromemes When the server is running low on memory it starts paging data out to the swapfile on disk. Disk is really slow and server slows way down. Let's put that swapfile on a ramdisk so the server doesn't slow down

Ruby doesn't need frozen_string_literal: true anymore. But it's calcified into the tooling. Rubocop demands it, emacs autoinjects it. It's long covid for your codebase. The codebase needs PT and occupational rehab. (And it's harmless. This hill is unimportant. Fight me. 😂)
