You’ve given Bittu the space to do this by erasing Khalistan from Bhai Khalra. The Hindustani’s get to use Khalistan as an expose or ‘big reveal’ because we peddle a sanitized image. When we internalize that Khalistan is a bad thing we allow Indians to then beat us with it like "behold Khalra was Khalistani". Sikhs should say our greatest heros were khalistani, there were other human rights workers but what made khalra occupy the highest status of a Shaheed was that he was Khalistani.

Re-reading this article I wrote about Punjab 95/Satluj it’s clear the film could never deliver Bhai Khalra as the protagonist, instead it could only cast Bhai Khalra isolated from the politics and struggle that shaped his work. By erasing Khalistan it inadvertently framed the Indian state as the actual protagonist. The film gives us emotional performance but not the worldview of a Shaheed.
