Hey architects, Field notes from building payments on @arc testnet. Three things we didn't expect: 1. Gas priced in dollars changed the product, not just the bill. We rebuilt fee quoting from scratch once one-cent payments stopped being absurd. 2. Deterministic finality deleted an argument we'd been having for years — there's no confirmation count to pick, defend, or explain to a merchant. 3. EVM meant nothing got thrown away. Existing Solidity, verifier and reconciliation work carried straight over. Checkout, payouts and agent payments all run on it now. Still testnet, still @USDC-only, no real funds. How many confirmations is enough? Nobody can answer that. One is fast and risky. Twelve is safe and your customer already closed the tab. So every merchant picks a number somewhere in between and calls it a policy, when it's really just a guess about how much fraud they can stomach versus how many carts they can lose. That's not a settings problem. It's what probabilistic finality does to a checkout. @arc has deterministic finality — sub-second, and done means done. Money still keeps banker's hours. Send a cross-border payment Friday evening and it lands Tuesday. Not because anything is hard — because a correspondent bank closed, a cut-off passed, and two countries had different holidays. Your supplier waits three days while nobody, anywhere, does any work. To send a dollar, most chains make you own something else first. Think about how insane that is as a checkout flow. Your customer has the money. They have exactly the asset they want to pay you in. And the payment still fails — because they didn't separately acquire a second, volatile token, in an amount nobody could tell them in advance, to pay for the privilege of moving the first one. Every merchant running crypto checkout has eaten this. Cart abandoned at the final step. Not because the customer couldn't afford it. Because their gas ran out mid-transaction and the UX had no answer. It's worse on the business side. Finance teams are told to hold a volatile asset permanently on the balance sheet, forever, purely as transaction fuel. Try explaining that line item to a CFO. Most of them just say no, and that "no" is the actual reason enterprise stablecoin payments stalled — not throughput, not regulation. An accounting problem dressed up as an infrastructure problem. @arc removes the second asset entirely. @USDC is the native gas token. Fees are denominated in dollars, small and predictable. An AI agent bought something last week. Not a demo. A real transaction, on-chain, settled to a merchant. The payment was 1 cent. The fee was five hundred-thousandths of a dollar. 0.01000 USDC in → 0.00005 USDC fee → 0.00995 USDC to the merchant. Block 51,827,646. Webhook delivered. 12 of 12 verification checks passed before anything was marked complete. On most chains that transaction is nonsense — gas alone would cost more than the thing being bought. Which is exactly why machine-to-machine commerce has stayed a slide in a deck for three years. You cannot build an economy of one-cent decisions on rails that charge a dollar to move. @arc changes the arithmetic. @circle built it as a Layer-1 where @USDC is the native gas token — fees are denominated in dollars, small and predictable, and you don't have to hold a volatile asset just to pay for a transfer. The next customer may not click “Pay.” It may be software. AI agents can discover services, compare routes and initiate transactions. But agentic payments still need answers: Who authorized the payment? What conditions release the funds? Where is the settlement evidence? What happens when execution fails? How does the merchant reconcile it later? @arc is being built for real-time value movement across people, businesses and software agents, with predictable dollar-based fees and deterministic settlement. A stablecoin payment should not produce an unstable checkout quote. On most networks, the order is priced in dollars while gas is priced in a volatile asset. The merchant sees one amount. The customer sees a moving target. @arc changes that foundation with dollar-denominated network fees. Inside the public XPAYR Swap and Bridge preview, we are testing a clearer quote breakdown that separates: XPAYR fee Protocol cost Gas boundary Expected destination amount Recovery state Everything is visible before wallet approval or signature.
