I walked into a Software Engineering interview at Safaricom PLC thinking I understood Data Structures & Algorithms. Then I was asked to actually code them. That experience made me realize there's a big difference between knowing the theory and implementing it. University gives us the concepts, but not enough practice writing the code. During my internship period, I also had to learn how to set up servers, navigate large codebases, and understand existing file structures. Real-world software engineering is much more than what we learn in class.

I’m just glad that none of my client uses the E-tims API hehe. That would’ve been a long weekend and a Monday bluer than balls. Anyway guys, when integrating with any Kenyan API make sure to build retries into the system. Async from day one. Push jobs in a queue, log all API responses for audits etc. Correctly classify errors as non retry-able and retry-able. Have a sensible deadline for retires. Like you have no business sending someone an OTP after three days.

Retry. Recover. Repeat. You can always begin again. Life doesn't enforce exponential backoff. 😂 Every failure is just another retry until your final shutdown.

Interviewed a Senior Backend Engineer today. Knew databases, caching, microservices, Redis — all of it. Then I asked: "You need to add a column to a table with 500 million rows. The table is being read and written to 24/7. You can't take the database offline. You can't afford downtime. How do you do it?" Silence.
