THIS. I started grad. school in the Fall of 1999 at a public R1. One of my profs told me point blank that it was a great place to be if I wanted to read books and write about them, but that it wasn't a smart career move because there weren't any jobs. I did it anyway because I didn't want to do anything else then. In retrospect, I was foolish, and I'm lucky that I ended up with an academic job. It's inconceivable that anyone teaching humanities grad. students in the 21st C. didn't warn them that things were dire.

I was a B student with good SAT scores at a poor public high school in the early nineties. Got rejected by Penn State likely bc of a GPA threshold. Went to Delaware thanks to those SAT scores and ended up with an honors degree and a Ph.D. because they took a chance on me (and likely wanted those out-of-state tuition dollars).

100%. This is a symptom of admin. bloat, the de-professionalization of the faculty, and the push toward college as pre-vocational, and, a product. The people making the call to go all-in on AI aren't deep thinkers. They're cut from the same cloth as the ed. tech-ers who've polluted our K-12 schools with chromebooks and fake ipads for the last decade. The college president featured in the NYT who wants to turn herself into a hologram or something? It's farcical. Philip Roth meets William Gibson.

@SenRonJohnson Not only did they ignore it, they had Twitter and Facebook censor the injured on social media while we were trying to help each other after most doctors abandoned and gaslit us. We had to write in code to avoid the algorithms.

If a psych. prof. at a state school in flyover country wants to poll undergrads. about their screen time or sex habits, then they need to go through human subject/IRB approval. Meanwhile, at UNC, dude designed a plague without consequence.

I teach college journalism, and, at one point, was writing about misinformation before it was a thing. The first Pfizer shot made me as sick as I've ever been in my life in the summer of 2021. It was horrifying. I've recovered, but there are many who haven't, and I'm still angry that the press hasn't told their stories (while constantly banging on about their willingness to speak truth to power).

I was in my mid.-twenties and I was in school because I didn't want a 9-5 job and I didn't want to work at a restaurant. I had a blast and a good portion of us did better than expected on the job market. My dept. punched above its weight. That said, the t.t. job situation has further deteriorated, and, at the same time, our culture increasingly treats ALL advanced degrees as credentials that entitle their holders to vocational success. And then there's the fact that most grad. students in the humanities don't want alt.-academic jobs, they want t.t. ones. I have no idea what the solution is. Maybe keep programs intact, but don't take students who aren't funded, and be as honest with potential students as my profs were with me back then. Some of them will do it any way . . .

Worked at TGI Fridays post-college. Then process management at Chrysler plant (despite English degree). Started an MFA. Bailed on it because it wasn't rigorous. Started a masters where I went to undergrad. Had to sit out a year and adjunct before I was accepted into the PhD program there. Defended dissertation 10 years after my BA.

Yes. @coachdango how about a psyllium husk-free alternative for those of us who get plenty of fiber? Psyllium is a laxative and it sucks water from the gut. Also isn't recommended in systems like Ayurveda for daily use. Please don't say chia. Again, nothing wrong with it, but those sort of bulk agents don't agree with everyone. Flax, hemp, etc.? What say you? Thanks!

I was injured by the COVID-19 vaccine. My doctor did not enter it in VAERS and gaslit me. Most injured people don't bother because they've intuited, correctly, that no one cares. I called Pfizer and they sent a packet to my house that asked if I'd died among other questions. There was no indication that any help would be forthcoming. This sadly tracks with other injured patients' experiences. I recycled it. There was no point in wasting my time on it. Again, the consensus is that no one cares. And they wonder why there are measles outbreaks again. It's all of a piece.

@Melchizedek1972 @CharlesRixey @Gmwetz @philamillan That makes sense. The main question I have is whether cells that express the spike due to the vax replicate the spike. Or whether people are sick are somehow immunocompromised and can't clear the spike-- be it from the vax or infection.

@Melchizedek1972 @CharlesRixey @Gmwetz Thanks. Wondering, I guess, if it's circulating due to infection and the body's inability to clear it OR if the cells that produced it post-vax are continuing to produce it bc there is no off switch or if they're replicating and continue to produce it.

@katrosenfield @unherd The writing was solid. My grandfather subscribed and my mom grew up reading it in the 1950s. My nana, who was born in 1909, and taught first grade, read it too apparently. That said, my brother and I couldn't get my parents to subscribe in the 80s.

Journalists need to write stories that people want to pay for and read vs. stories that they feel compelled and/or obligated to read to be good citizens in our democracy. As the field's been hollowed out by declining circulation, and, yes, by decreased ad revenues, journalists have been asked to do more with less which means that a lot of stories just aren't well-written or compelling. They've also lost the public's trust through mishandling the COVID-19 pandemic. And then there's AI. The way forward is heterodox, nuanced reporting written by human beings, and viable, self-sustaining local news outlets that enrich their communities.

I was previously a big fan of your work. But I was injured by the COVID-19 vaccine that my university mandated and no one helped me. I recovered, no thanks to my GP, but there are people out there who weren't so lucky. Uptake is declining because the injured were abandoned and because most people know someone who was injured. Want to fix the uptake problem? Then acknowledge and help the COVID-19 injured and try some candor and contrition.
