Malaysia should guarantee every citizen aged 75 and above RM500 a month for life. About 850,000 of our oldest Malaysians would receive it. Cost: RM5.1 billion a year. That's only around 1.3% of the Federal Government's operating budget. At 75, most Malaysians are no longer earning a salary. For many, their EPF savings are already severely depleted. RM500 isn't enough to make anyone rich. But it can pay for groceries, electricity, medicines and the small necessities of everyday life ; without having to ask their children for every ringgit. And make it universal. No means test. No application. No proving you're poor. Turn 75, and Malaysia guarantees you RM500 every month. Because a country should not allow someone who has worked for 40 or 50 years to reach the final years of life with zero income. For RM5.1 billion a year, we can give 850,000 elderly Malaysians something extraordinarily important: A minimum income. And a little dignity in old age.
