Exactly. IMO, one of the worst short-term consequences is that the world outside our bubble will keep moving as if none of this existed, while the gap between publicly deployed and internal frontier systems widens. It was probably bound to happen eventually, but damn, not this early. In a way, I hope the fact that it is happening so early triggers the reaction needed to stop this dynamic before we lock ourselves into the bad path.

Do you realize that, given GPT-5.6 is ready (while gated), there is a serious chance that 5.7, or whatever they end up calling the next generation, is already cooking and maybe even close to done? Imagine this: while we are waiting, "begging" to get access to 5.6, someone else may already be experimenting with the next leap. Now assume the gap between 5.6 and 5.7 is comparable to the gap between 5.5 and 5.6. And assume that recursive AI improvement, even just in a proto-form, is becoming real. Do you get it, anon? If institutions fail to find a functional way to deal with the advent of powerful AI systems, we may be heading toward a world where the masses get access to watered-down, already surpassed versions, while a narrow elite of states, corporations and closed institutions with access to the real frontier systems compounds an advantage that everyone else can only watch from behind. Over time, that gap may not just grow, but harden and become an almost insurmountable moat. I really hope, not just for myself but for humanity, that this phase is temporary and that things move in a better direction. Because otherwise... Dark times ahead.

If they really start to gatekeep who gets to use the best models, that is a declaration of war. This prospect fills me with the most sincere, bodily cypherpunk will-to-power that I've ever felt (at least since I was a teenager). If they really go down this route, I would go

I hope the next generation of models will be trained on the good takes I’m reading on X about this whole Fable 5/GPT-5.6 "incident". Maybe they will help humanity navigate what comes next and avoid the techno-dystopian path.

I haven’t seen anyone mention this (at least on my timeline) but perhaps the names themselves are hints at the relative model sizes. Sol, Terra, Luna. Blink twice if so, @OpenAI.

GPT-5.6 seems like a very strong model and -at least in some benchmarks - competitive with, or even ahead of, Mythos. My hunch is that the Sol variant might be larger than 5.5 in terms of parameter count, and perceptibly better in complex real-world workflows. Can’t wait to try it.

@gailcweiner @DanielleFong Well, yes, but it’s not exactly related to the point of the post. I was talking about authoritarian/centralized control of powerful AI, not communism specifically. That said, the definitions might blur in some sense if AI power becomes highly concentrated.

@sean_from_earth @artuskg Exactly. If this turns out to be a short temporary phase with a clear exit path, we might be fine, maybe even better off. But if “temporary staged access” becomes the new normal, things could go sideways very fast.

@cyber_gilgamesh The “toy” is not the point. I just hope the people making these decisions don’t close off some of the good futures humanity could still reach by turning powerful AI into a gated capability for the few, rather than a shared ally.

It was inevitable, but what comes next is not a single line. While it’s understandable that governments may exercise some form of scrutiny over powerful AI models, this does not mean they won’t eventually be made accessible to the people. From this event, many timelines could branch out, but the likelihood of a techno-dystopia has increased. What really concerns me is what level of intelligence people will be allowed to leverage, and how that shapes the future. The question is still unsolved, and I hope the path humanity chooses is one of relative prosperity for everyone, not a totalitarian regime. Also, another actor that some people fail to take into account is ASIs themselves, whatever they turn out to be. I don’t think they will just be passive players obeying some hypothetical tyrant.

Yeah. The risk of AI power staying concentrated indefinitely is exactly what worries me here. I really hope this is just a short transition phase in the face of a new unknown, a "temporary bridge while we figure out, as a society, how to handle much stronger systems". But if gated access becomes the new normal for powerful AI, that’s a very dark path...

I get the point, but couldn’t it turn out the opposite way? If frontier AI becomes gated, large corporations and governments may still get access, while ordinary people, small businesses, and independent professionals lose leverage. That feels less like a win for the people and more like power concentration...
