@ishmilly addressed this the other day and I've addressed it countless times over the years.
Now I will agree that if you buy a domain today for $1000 and you sell it for $100,000 or $1 million within a few months or a year or two that's noteworthy.
BUT.... that's not what we're really talking about is it?

They plant the seed.
Then they don’t water it.
They don’t wait for germination.
They don’t wait for it to break ground.
They don’t wait for it to grow.
I made a mistake for years so I wanna set the record straight.
I always thought I bought SmartGlasses.com for $3,500.
I checked recently.
I actually paid $3,932.
I think that might've been the price with the commission tacked on.
I bought it in February 2012.
So far, that’s a 14-year hold.
Could I have flipped it the next day for $5,000 or $6,000?
Maybe.
That would have been a one-day hold.
But I didn’t buy SmartGlasses.com to flip it.
I bought it because I believed it would become a sector the moment I heard the phrase for the first time.
Today, the biggest technology companies in the world are investing billions into that very sector.
Just recently, I even picked up IntelligentGlasses.com after hearing the phrase for the first time.
So for a little over $5,000 total for the pair, I feel like I bought an emerging sector.
That’s how I’ve always viewed category-defining domains.
Not as domain names.
As positions.
As leverage.
As the equivalent of owning the heading in the 800 Yellow Pages which was my business bible back in the day.
If you own the heading, good things tend to happen. Less headwinds, more tail winds.
The hardest lesson in domain investing is learning which domains to sell and which domains to never touch.
Those are the untouchables.
And when the right person or entity finally shows up…
You’ll know.
At that point, nobody will care whether you held it for 1 year, 10 years, or 20 years.
And you’ll be too busy deciding what to do with the millions.

💡 Today’s Domaining Tip 💡
The lower the quality of the extension, the stronger the keyword must be.
Think of a domain’s value as a combination of two factors:
✅ The quality of the keyword
✅ The quality of the extension
If one is weak, the other needs to be exceptionally strong to compensate.
Examples
Average term + .COM = Decent chance to sell
BestGarden.comLocalDentist.comQuickPayroll.com
These aren’t ultra-premium keywords, but the .COM extension adds significant value and buyer confidence.
Great term + Average Extension = Decent chance to sell
Crypto.xyzAI.ioLoans.coHotels.net
The keyword is highly desirable, helping overcome the limitations of a less preferred extension.
Average term + Average Extension = Unlikely to sell
BestGarden.xyzQuickPayroll.onlineLocalDentist.siteSmartHub.store
Neither the keyword nor the extension stands out enough to create strong demand.
Rule of Thumb
The further you move away from .COM, the more selective you must become with your keywords.
A buyer might compromise on the extension or the keyword.
They rarely compromise on both.
As a domain investor, the lower tier the domain extension is the more premium the term needs to be.
Average term + .COM = Decent chance to sell.
Great term + average extension = Decent chance to sell.
Average term + average extension = Unlikely to sell.

I like to share story behind that.
In 2023, I hand-registered PCC.ai and submitted it to @atomHQ Premium. It was initially approved at $3,499, but I felt the AI market was just getting started, so I removed it. Later, I resubmitted it and Atom approved it in the $22k-$45k range. After further market research and a pricing review, I listed it at $77k.
A buyer came in at $50k. Following a negotiation strategy I learned from @TonyNames , I kept my floor at $50k and asked the broker to push higher. The buyer ultimately agreed to $70,000.
Huge thanks to the #domain community for all the knowledge shared along the way, and special thanks to @MichaelCyger , whose comment on my first sale gave me the confidence to keep going.
Sometimes the biggest difference between a $3,499 sale and a $70,000 sale is having the patience and conviction to hold the right asset.
