We've entered into an agreement to join OpenAI as part of the Codex team. I'm incredibly proud of the work we've done so far, incredibly grateful to everyone that's supported us, and incredibly excited to keep building tools that make programming feel different.
Over the last ~2 weeks I've rewritten the @ladybirdbrowser JavaScript compiler in Rust using AI agents. ~25k lines of safe Rust (20k if you exclude comments). No regressions on test262 or our own internal test suites. Extensively tested against the live web by browsing in lockstep mode where we run both the C++ and Rust pipelines, and then verify identical AST & bytecode. We're making a pragmatic decision and adopting Rust as a C++ successor language. What a time to be alive!

For the past 3 months I have been watching a surprising instantaneous discontinuity in the adoption pattern of many widely used Rust libraries. See for yourself in the attached graphs, which show the fraction of crates‑io with a direct dependency on each of these crates. The inflection in April 2025 is not subtle. These crates are suddenly massively more widely used in new code than they used to be, including crates that have been previously on an extremely consistent trajectory for a half decade, like base64 and thiserror. I spend a lot of time examining graphs like this to make sense of the ecosystem and I noticed this emerging a while ago. I can say it is unprecedented in the history of crates‑io for usage patterns to shift drastically like this in a broad spectrum of crates. My best guess is that AI uses these crates at a different rate than the human authored baseline rate, and crates‑io is currently being inundated with AI-authored code. Can someone help line this up with a product launch?
If you took a list of PRs today and showed it to me 5y ago without any context, I'd think that somehow everyone got learning disabilities. And that's insulting to people with learning disabilities because they're actually perfect, while these PRs are by deeply flawed people. That's how stupid 90% of AI coded PRs look.
