I’ve started writing a children’s book. The idea: A little girl asks her grandfather about how to find out what she wants to do when she grows up, because adults keep asking her that question. The grandfather takes her through the local town to meet people and ask them questions about why they do what they do, and find valuable insights and life lessons from people of all walks of life. More to come. I think this will be a cool story not just for kids, but adults as well.

As we celebrate the Fourth of July today, it is worth looking back at the complicated, beautiful, and ultimately hopeful history of our nation. Many of us know John Adams and Thomas Jefferson as two of our most prominent Founding Fathers, but their relationship was anything but simple. For much of their lives, these two men were bitter political rivals. Their disagreements were deep and fundamental, rooted in opposing visions for what the United States should become. They clashed publicly, challenged each other in the press, and went years without speaking a word to one another. Yet, after leaving public office, they bridged the gap. They began writing letters, reigniting a friendship that transcended their political battles. They found a way to honor the profound humanity of the other, even while maintaining their ideological differences. Their journey from bitter rivals to reconciled friends serves as a powerful reminder of what is possible when we choose common ground over conflict. It is deeply saddening to see how many friendships across our country have fractured over politics in recent years. We have become so entrenched in our specific viewpoints that the mere mention of a political subject often feels like an invitation to hostility. When we allow political labels to define our relationships, we lose the nuance and connection that make a society thrive. We stop seeing our neighbors, friends, and family members as whole people and instead start viewing them as caricatures of a political stance. If we want to build a politics that actually functions, we must start by cultivating friendships that go far deeper than the news cycle. A healthy democracy requires the ability to engage in civil discourse, which is only possible when the underlying relationship is built on mutual respect and genuine care. When we prioritize the bond of friendship over the pursuit of being right, we create the space needed to listen, learn, and move forward together. This Fourth of July, I hope we can all take a moment to reflect on the legacy of men like Adams and Jefferson.
