Time Capsule Tales @timecaptales

Doris "Dorie" Miller was born on a farm outside Waco, Texas in 1919, the son of sharecroppers. When he enlisted in the Navy in 1939, the only job open to a Black sailor was mess attendant — serving officers' meals and doing laundry. He was also the heavyweight boxing champion of his ship. On the morning of December 7, 1941, he was collecting laundry aboard the USS West Virginia when the torpedoes hit. He ran to his battle station and found it destroyed. He helped carry the mortally wounded captain off the bridge. Then he got behind an unattended .50-caliber anti-aircraft gun — a weapon the Navy had never trained him to use — and fired until the ammunition ran out. Asked about it later, he said: "It wasn't hard. I just pulled the trigger and she worked fine." The Navy commended an unnamed Black sailor in January 1942. It took the Pittsburgh Courier until March to get his name out. Nimitz pinned the Navy Cross on him that May. He was killed in 1943 when his escort carrier was torpedoed. He was 24.

I spent LBJ Day with his daughter, Luci Baines Johnson. I’m running for her father’s Senate seat to continue LBJ’s fight for education, healthcare, and economic opportunity for all.  I’m honored to be in this fight with Luci. In November, we’re going to win back her dad’s seat.

Russia strikes Kharkiv every single day. I rarely write about it anymore. Not many people seem to care, and the news outlets never mention it. Posting about it feels like screaming into a void. If Russia can kill 30 people in a capital city full of journalists without any global outrage, who is going to care about a destroyed gas station and a single life lost in Kharkiv? Yet, they keep launching all kinds of drones and missiles at us. They strike Kharkiv several times a day, destroying our homes, injuring our people, and often killing them. I just wanted you to know. The photo below is from today. 8 people were injured in this strike.
