In the Mass, only bishops and priests should do the hands extended posture. The Roman Missal indicates this. The 1984 Ceremonial of Bishops, another official liturgical book, is clearer. General Instruction of the Roman Missal: "237. Then the principal celebrant, with hands joined, says the introduction to the Lord’s Prayer. Next, with hands extended, he says the Lord’s Prayer itself together with the other concelebrants, who also pray with hands extended, and together with the people.” GIRM 112: “At a Mass celebrated by the Bishop or at which he presides without celebrating the Eucharist, the norms found in the Caeremoniale Episcoporum (Ceremonial of Bishops) should be observed.” 1984 Ceremonial of Bishops: “104 Customarily in the Church a bishop or presbyter addresses prayers to God while standing and with hands slightly raised and outstretched.” Under the heading “V. Ministers are required to have hands joined. Who are the “ministers”, of the Ceremonial of Bishops, 107? I think deacons, instituted acolytes, instituted lectors, altar servers, readers, psalmists, cantors, commentators, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, and those in the choir. If deacons and lay ministers are required to have joined hands, and bishops and priests are required to have extended hands, is it appropriate for some lay people to have extended hands? No. There should be a “common bodily posture” as encouraged by GIRM 42. Ceremonial of Bishops provides more detail on hands joined in footnote 80. In Latin: “Quando dicitur manus iunctas tenere, intellegitur: “Palmas extensas ac simul iunctas ante pectus habere, pollice dexteræ super sinistro in crucis modum posito””.
