@jjuday Found out recently that there's no retro Hugos next year - 1945's works were covered in 1996 LA Con. 1946 works will be eligible in 2022. Extra time to build lists?

@jjuday I'm starting to put together a list. Hard to find movies for Dramatic-Long; many were 80 minutes. Editor-Long is also difficult: 4 books in 1 year, and there weren't many SFF books in 1945. But there's some great story options outside the normal range: Thurber, Orwell, etc.

@jjuday @tadethompson @tonypeak78 The Retro Hugos that just happened were for works published in 1944, which could've been eligible in '45. Works from 1945 will be eligible in 2021! Start making lists now!

@Bennihana70 @archer_rs They don't have to sell the house. But they can't live in it without a residency permit, which requires health insurance. Even getting a visiting visa for a few months a year can be a hassle. And non-citizens may face other restrictions on travel and activities.

@natakoes How you can be certain it's a scam: There's nowhere on their website saying how people can subscribe to or buy the magazines. If they're not trying to sell to the public, they're a scam.

@Sliced_Open @BiNetUSA It really sounds like they're trying to say, "this was designed after some conversations in our chatrooms and that makes it ours." Even if it's copyrightable (doubtful), the colors aren't. They'd only be able to lay claims to rectangles in the original proportions.

@salthien Most of the people working on AO3 have full time jobs. Nobody gets paid for it. You can critique all you like; nobody's stopping you. But AO3 isn't going to change its content rules no matter how many people are upset at them. AO3 was created FOR the content you want gone.

@gayprotagonist 'Sokay, I'm being flippant with you because your comprehension of the purpose of AO3 is lacking. (Not annoyed, tho.) AO3 was made for 'weird shit' and that won't change. People who don't like it can make their own, just like we did. AO3's code is even open source.

@gayprotagonist It is evolving along with its culture and audience of choice. It's got better search filters and a better tagging system now than when it started. It's not changing for a marginal audience who were never the reason the archive was designed.

@gayprotagonist If you're not happy with the progress on the site, you don't have to use it. They knew beta would take a very long time. Roadmap: archiveofourown.org/admin_posts/295 AO3 won't be out of beta until it has a system for browsing fanworks by type. (Among other details.)

Why are you "forced" to be at AO3? You could use FF.net or Wattpad or a free Wordpress site, and not share a site with content you hate. If you mean "I have to be there to get noticed," that says something about what most people think is OK at a fic archive.

@dyo_nisys I moved to AO3 out of forced obligation and I hate all the shit on it and I wish I didn't have to upload my content to a site that allows CP and rape for it to get attention. Something's WRONG when removing all that gross stuff from searches also removes 90% of search results :/

That's what we said 10 years ago, and that's how AO3 got built. All it takes is a few dozen people with coding, business, and legal skills, some people-wrangling ability, a few thousand dollars and few hundred volunteers to get it started.

You don't have to give anything! Ever! AO3 has donation drives twice a year (Apr & Oct), but they know most ppl can't afford it, and that's fine. They don't know who can, so everyone gets a request. This is the only way they get money to operate.

There are no owners. The #OTW is a nonprofit organization. There are members (several thousand), a board of directors, and several volunteer teams who work on various aspects of #AO3. …why should the mods at a site you hate talk with you, and why here?
