The Environmental Management Authority (EMA) recently welcomed representatives of the AIIC for a strategic meeting to explore opportunities for collaboration at the intersection of environmental management and emerging technologies. The EMA delegation was led by Chairman Mr. Doolar Ramlal and Managing Director Dr. Joth Singh, together with members of the EMA’s management and technical teams. The AIIC was represented by Executive Director Dr. Craig Ramlal, Mr. Ravi Deonarine, Mr. Kevon Andrews and Mr. Daniel Goitia. Discussions focused on identifying areas of mutual interest and collaboration, recognising the important role that innovation and artificial intelligence can play in supporting sound environmental management, evidence-based decision-making and sustainable development. What does environmental protection look like behind the scenes? It starts with boots on the ground to monitor compliance. 👷🏽‍♀️🌿 Every site visit tells a story. Each month the EMA’s Permit Monitoring and Compliance (PMC) Team visits projects to conduct assessments to ensure compliance with permit conditions. In these photos, the EMA’s PMC team visited two very different facilities, each playing an important role in Trinidad and Tobago's sustainable future. ☀️ At the Brechin Castle Solar Facility, the team observed the completed construction of a utility-scale solar energy project, where thousands of solar panels are poised to help generate cleaner, renewable energy for the country. 💧 At the New Beetham Wastewater Treatment Facility, the team examined critical treatment processes, including aeration, clarification and ultraviolet disinfection systems, while meeting with plant personnel to discuss operations and the ongoing management of wastewater before it is safely discharged. These visits form a critical part of the EMA's ongoing permit monitoring and compliance programme, ensuring that facilities operate in accordance with their environmental approvals and permit conditions. Through regular inspections, collaboration and oversight, we help protect our water, land and communities, today and for future generations. Every site visit to a permit holder contributes to a healthier environment. On the Ground. Monitoring Progress. Managing the Environment. The Environmental Management Authority’s Emergency Response and Investigations Team continues to work alongside the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries (MEEI) and Heritage Petroleum Company Limited (HPCL) to monitor ongoing cleanup and remediation activities following a pipeline incident in Barrackpore. During the joint site inspection, the team assessed the progress of response efforts, verified the effectiveness of containment measures, and identified areas where additional cleanup is still required. While significant progress has been made, the EMA will continue to monitor the site closely to ensure that remediation activities are completed in a timely manner and the environment is restored. The EMA’s Emergency Response and Investigations Team continues its field presence, working alongside partners to support a coordinated response, uphold environmental oversight and ensure accountability. #EMA #environment #trinidadandtobago

On 1 July 2026, members of the EMA's People, Public & Private (3P) Network had the pleasure of attending and exhibiting at the UWI - Faculty of Food and Agriculture's (FFA) Green Innovators Challenge 2026 Award Ceremony. This second instalment of the competition provided Form 3 Secondary School students across Trinidad and Tobago a platform to test their creativity, innovation and leadership in agriculture, nutrition and environmental sustainability and featured two categories: the Agri-Vision Models and the Nutri-Tools Challenge. Below are the winning schools in each category. Category 1 - Agri-Vision Models: 1st place - Marabella North Secondary School (Eco Herd) 2nd place - St. Joseph's Convent, St. Joseph (SJCSJ Eco-Advocates) 3rd place - St. Joseph's Convent, St. Joseph (Keystone Conservation) Category 2 - Nutri-Tools 1st place - Naparima Girls' High School (Nutrishine) 2nd place - Five Rivers Secondary School (WES4-G 4-H) 3rd place - ASJA Boys' College, San Fernando (The Wellness Squad) Congratulations to all winning and participating students and teachers. 🌱 Strengthening Climate Reporting Through Collaboration The Environmental Management Authority (EMA) recently hosted a Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) Training Workshop for key stakeholders in the Land-use, Land-use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) Sector, bringing together more than 60 participants to strengthen Trinidad and Tobago's greenhouse gas (GHG) data collection and reporting systems. Funded under the Global Environment Facility (GEF) BTR Project, the workshop forms part of Trinidad and Tobago's efforts to meet its reporting commitments under the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Participants explored: ✅ Best practices for collecting and reporting GHG data ✅ Practical approaches to integrating data collection into daily operations ✅ The importance of accurate environmental data for evidence-based decision-making, improved efficiency and sustainable development The interactive session also provided stakeholders with an opportunity to discuss the challenges they face, including limited technical capacity, resource constraints and data management systems. These valuable insights will help shape an improvement plan to strengthen the LULUCF sector's reporting capacity. By working together with stakeholders, the EMA continues to build stronger environmental data systems that support climate action, transparency and improved environmental quality for Trinidad and Tobago. Media Release: Sustainability Leaders Honoured at Green Leaf Awards 2026 The Environmental Management Authority (EMA) honoured some of Trinidad and Tobago's most forward-thinking organisations at the Green Leaf Awards (GLA) 2026, marking the revitalisation of the country's premier environmental recognition programme. Held under the theme, "Celebrating Sustainability in the Private Sector," the event recognised organisations demonstrating excellence in sustainability, innovation and climate action. The ceremony brought together representatives from government, business, academia, civil society and the international community. Delivering the feature address, Minister of Finance and Minister in the Ministry of Planning, Economic Affairs and Development, Senator the Honourable Davendranath Tancoo, emphasised that environmental responsibility and economic development are mutually reinforcing and essential to building a resilient and prosperous Trinidad and Tobago. The Honourable Farley Chavez Augustine, Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly, also delivered remarks highlighting the importance of environmental stewardship and sustainable development. This year's award recipients reflected the private sector's growing commitment to sustainable development. Winners included 3 Circles Energy Consultants Limited (Emerging ESG Champion), Aquatik Solutions (Best Innovative Environmental Technology), Milagros Solutions Limited (Best Waste Reduction Initiative), Close the Loop Caribbean Limited (Most Impactful Greenhouse Gas Reduction Project), and Renewable Power Caribbean Limited (Outstanding External Education Project). Merit Awards were presented to Guardian Group, Blewcoast, Carib Glassworks Limited, Caribbean Gas Chemical Limited and Advisors Next Door. According to Chairman of the EMA, Mr. Doolar Ramlal, “the GLA represents more than recognition; the awards embody the commitment to celebrating organisations that are advancing environmental stewardship through innovation, climate action and responsible business practices”. He noted that the “achievements of this year's awardees demonstrate that sustainability and economic success are mutually reinforcing and reaffirm the private sector's critical role in building a more resilient and sustainable Trinidad and Tobago”. Reflecting on the changing nature of environmental leadership, Managing Director Dr. Joth Singh pointed to the growing importance of innovation, adaptability and long-term value creation. He noted that the “organisations honoured at GLA 2026 demonstrate how responsible environmental management can strengthen competitiveness, inspire confidence and contribute meaningfully to national development, providing a powerful example for others to emulate”. The revitalised programme also serves as a catalyst for collaboration and innovation. Deputy Chairman Ms. Neeala Mongroo highlighted “the importance of the GLA as a platform for showcasing solutions and encouraging organisations to embed sustainability at the heart of their operations”. In her view, the leadership displayed by this year's finalists and winners is helping to cultivate a culture of environmental responsibility that will benefit generations to come.
