@Mr_NickClarke @katesineed Shouldnt be, all housing data is annual snapshots for the datasets. What's true is all vacancy has risen and local data varies enormously - with council homes factors include stock levels and strategy - lack of investment and estate regen are factors but dont explain total rise

@Mr_NickClarke @katesineed 2025 CTaxbase gives London local authority owned empties as 10,894 its a snapshot so comparable to 'all empties' figure -includes between lets short term vacant council hones as well as longer term which may be awaiting regen, demolition or disposal linked to estate regen schemes

@tohonestycom You just aren't paying attention proposals include a Capital Gains Tax exemption for sales into social use. That allows the benefit to be split between the public purchaser (council) and the seller - both benefit. London and many other places already buy homes on the open market.

@tohonestycom Read about the Empty Dwelling Management Order - that is broadly what it does, using rent to fund renovation where needed and bringing the property back into use but not attacking the ownership or capital value (in fact improving it) All explained here: actiononemptyhomes.org/edmos

@tohonestycom Equally simply buying these homes and retrofitting where required to create homes that are healthy and affordable to live in, with lower bills as well as affordable rents would be another viable option and (CGT) tax reforms could incentivise this and save public money.
