The clock is ticking louder than ever. The need for early warnings and smart investments to fight #climatechange has never been so urgent. Today the @UNEP published the #AdaptationGap report lnkd.in/dPAHkJ4f just before the big climate meeting, #COP28, painting a clear picture of where we stand. Here's a simple breakdown of what's happening and why it's a big deal: The Money Gap: The report says we need way more money to adapt to climate changes. The gap in finances for adaptation efforts is now at least 50% larger than we thought. Developing countries are feeling the pinch. They need 10-18 times more money than what international public finances are providing. Right now, the money gap is about US$194-366 billion every year. This is a lot of money that should be helping countries cope with climate problems but isn't. The Action Gap: Although we know climate troubles are growing, the actions to fight them are not catching up. This slow action is hurting people, especially the ones who are already vulnerable. In 2023, bad weather like storms and heatwaves caused a lot of damage. Despite this, the actions to reduce greenhouse gases and protect people are not increasing as they should. The Planning Gap: The report has updated numbers. Now, it says developing countries will need between US$215 billion to US$387 billion every year this decade for adaptation. Even with some plans in place, the progress is slow. The promises of more money for adaptation made in previous meetings like COP26 are not being kept. Now, let’s talk about solutions and why monitoring is key. We need to watch the environment closely to see troubles coming before they hit hard. This is what Early Warning for the environment does. They help us see the problems early, plan better, and invest smartly. Upstream: At the first level, we use data and monitoring to see and stop environmental risks early. This helps save both nature and people’s livelihoods. Midstream: By acting early, we strengthen our environment, reducing pollution and other risks, making it a safer place for everyone. Downstream: Here's where it gets interesting. By showing how solving environmental problems can also benefit society and economy, we attract more investments. For instance, spending money to control air pollution not only makes the air cleaner but can also bring back $30 for every $1 spent. The #AdaptationGap report is a loud wake-up call. It shows us the problems but also suggests solutions. It tells us that by carefully watching the environment, planning smartly, and investing in the right places, we can tackle climate changes and create better living and working conditions for everyone. As we move towards #COP28, this report lays down the path. We need to close these gaps in money, action, and planning by focusing on monitored investments in adaptation. @MaartenKappelle
