The 3 wise men from the East are set to head to Rome: Chimdiebube Onwubiko, Egejurum Onyedikachi, and Don Anele Munachimso. Their assignment is simple: bring back the gold. They will be competing with 154 other countries in Rome, Italy, this week. Since Nigeria couldn’t qualify for the World Cup, this will be our World Cup.

This would be a more satisfying World Cup than the FIFA World Cup. The problem is policymakers don't seem to realise it. We celebrate sporting victories as national achievements, yet invest a fraction as much attention in science, engineering and innovation. Sports didn't build Japan, China, Israel, Singapore or the United States. Science, technology and industry did. Developing countries shouldn't give themselves the luxury of treating sport as a national priority while science remains an afterthought. If Nigeria invested in research with the same passion it invests in football, we'd be competing for something far more valuable than FIFA or CAF trophies.

The EU is taking action against low value e-commerce imports to protect retailers. While ensuring imported products meet EU safety standards and creating a level playing field are worthwhile goals, policies like this risk increasing costs for consumers without addressing the underlying challenges facing retail businesses. The problem with policies like this is that many online shoppers don't spend more than €150 on a single item. The reality is that people are increasingly shifting towards online shopping. Price is certainly a factor, but it's not the only one. The ability to compare dozens of options from the comfort of home, read reviews, and have items delivered without taking time off work is just as important. It might be more helpful to invest in programmes that help retailers become more competitive instead of relying primarily on import duties. That could include helping businesses reduce operating costs, build a stronger presence on social media, launch independent e-commerce websites, improve logistics, and better understand how to compete in the online marketplace. Consumer behaviour has changed, and it's unlikely to reverse. Rather than trying to slow that shift, policy should focus on helping retailers adapt to it. Businesses that embrace digital commerce will be better positioned to compete in the present and future. Lesson for retailers: Take advantage of e commerce before it takes your customers and take you out of business.

Stop Fighting the proposed Research Topic.. This is part 4 of the mistakes that hinder scholarship success. Many postgraduate applicants make the mistake of trying to bend a professors proposed research topic. They see a funded research project. Then they spend their proposal explaining why the advertised research topic is not viable or not the best area. Imagine a professor advertises a PhD project on green hydrogen. An applicant submits a proposal arguing that blue hydrogen is the better alternative. Technically, the applicant may have valid arguments. But in practical terms, the application has missed the point. The funding received by the supervisor for this study was awarded to research green hydrogen. The professor cannot simply change the project because one applicant prefers another topic. Doing so will be a misappropriation of funds. A stronger applicant approaches it differently. Instead of arguing against the research direction, they ask: "How can my knowledge help solve the existing challenges within this project?" That small shift changes everything. Scholarship committees and supervisors are looking for collaborators not people trying to redirect funded research. Always align your proposal with the objectives of the project while showing the unique perspective you bring. This is a very positive move. I will suggest a step further. Engage the student union president and let’s sink a maintenance message in before the completion of this project. That no be my papa house attitude that is seen in many quarters needs to be rooted out and the SUG should be in a good position to carry that responsibility. I've held three leadership positions. I've volunteered for five NGOs. These facts are Impressive, but here's the question scholarship committees want you to answer. Did the scholarship committee ask about those things? Some applicants write the essay they want to write instead of the essay they were asked to write. Imagine this essay prompt: "How will this scholarship help you contribute to improving healthcare in your country?" Applicant A spends two pages describing academic awards, leadership positions, and volunteer experiences. Applicant B briefly mentions those achievements, then explains how the scholarship will equip her with the skills to reduce maternal mortality in underserved communities. Both applicants are accomplished but only one answered the question. Scholarship essays are not another version of your CV. They are an opportunity to demonstrate that you understand the scholarship's purpose and that you're the right person to advance it. A practical tip Before submitting your essay, read the prompt again. Then ask yourself this question. If someone only read my essay, would they know exactly what question I was answering? New safe and legal routes for refugees to come to the UK will begin to rollout in the autumn, giving genuine refugees a pathway to rebuild their lives. Our new community sponsorship scheme will allow approved groups to choose the refugees they sponsor, taking responsibility for their housing, integration and supporting them into work. Trusted universities will be able to directly sponsor refugees through a new refugee study route. A new refugee work sponsorship route is expected to open next year. All arrivals will have refugee status, undergo strict biometric screening, criminality checks and health assessments before arrival, to ensure support reaches those in genuine need. Numbers will start small and build over time, ensuring the routes remain controlled and sustainable while public confidence is restored in Britain’s immigration system. First refugee arrivals are expected by autumn 2027.
