So recently I was playing around with Go, and instead of making another traditional CRUD app to “learn stuff”…
I built a tiny highly available key-value cluster.
I kept hitting the same boredom loop: create table, write endpoints, ship a todo list, pretend I learned something. This time I wanted the uncomfortable questions:
How do nodes find each other without me pasting addresses forever?
How do strangers become a cluster?
How do writes survive when a node dies?
Who gets to be the leader, and what happens when they dont?
And the one that actually hurts in real life: what if one node is in India and another is in the USA, both behind NAT?
So I made go-distri (please dont judge with the name lol).
- HTTP on the outside for a simple KV API
- A hybrid registry for cold start — one URL, strangers can meet
- libp2p + a private Kademlia DHT so peers keep finding friends afterward
- A custom cluster handshake stream to exchange Raft/HTTP dial info
- Hashicorp Raft over plain TCP so the cluster actually agrees on data
- And for cross-country connectivity: Tailscale, so nodes advertise real dialable addresses instead of useless `127.0.0.1` / private LAN ghosts
That last part mattered more than I expected.
Discovery is not connectivity. A peer can show up in `/peers`, look alive, and still be unreachable from another country. The registry helps strangers meet. The DHT helps them keep finding friends. Raft helps them agree. Tailscale (or public IPs) is what makes the dial actually succeed across NATs.
The mental model I ended up with:
Registry = how strangers meet
DHT = how they keep finding friends
Tailscale = how they can actually reach each other
Raft = how they agree on the truth
It's not a product—just me exploring the kinds of problems distributed systems are built to solve.
