WARNING !!! If you're taking any young kids along to the Belle & Sebastian gig at Kelvingrove Bandstand in Glasgow tomorrow, be prepared to encounter the rather disturbing sight of a reverse centaur (aka Stuart Murdoch) on stage. It's truly the stuff of nightmares.
As expected, the Wolfe Tones put on a tremendous show at the Hydro tonight in what was likely to be their last visit to Glasgow. Brian Warfield, though, wasn't too happy with the "Kneecap Ars*holes" amongst the audience who spent a couple of songs tossing plastic pint glasses in the air. In a style very reminiscent of Donald Trump, he called them "terrible, terrible people" and asked the stewards to chuck them out.
On the one road to the Hydro in Glasgow for tonight's Wolfe Tones gig (well, obviously multiple roads will be used but I don't think they wrote a song about that). Changed days indeed for the band, from playing in front of a couple of hundred at the old Mayfair (Garage) over 30 years ago to a near sell-out at a 15k capacity venue. What hasn't changed is the passion and commitment from a band whose importance in revitalising the Irish folk scene cannot be underestimated. @wolfetones
@1962Vali Yep, they certainly seem to have a very loyal fan base. Re: the Manchester gig, it's always worth checking Ticketmaster for returns.
Does anyone remember Saint Etienne (the 90s indie dance darlings, rather than the French football team whose presence graced Glasgow in the 1976 European Cup Final vs Bayern Munich)? Here they are in action last night at the Piece Hall in Halifax, supporting Belle & Sebastian.
@hmca1969 That was certainly an unusual combination, presumably as a result of the Alan McGee connection. Must have been some night, though.
That seemed to be a thing during the 90s. Quite a few up and coming bands often "curtailed" their sets. Not sure if it was down to a lack of material. Prime example was the Manic Street Preachers at the Glasgow Mayfair/Garage. They lasted well under 30 minutes. Thankfully the support band, Birdland, ensured the night wasn't a total write-off.
Back to Bar 67 in Puerto Del Carmen, Lanzarote for tonight's Scotland - Brazil game, with a rousing rendition of "Flower of Scotland" Worth noting that no-one booed the framed Celtic tops on the wall.

😀 Given that you were in the presence of indie pop royalty, I would have certainly hoped you'd have remembered them - unless you make a habit of socialising with the rich and famous to the point where it all blurs into one. Maybe I should have rephrased the intro to the clip to something along the lines of "Here's St Etienne"
@goonerhip 10/10 for memory recall there, Andy. Only Sarah's name came back to me and, even then, I thought it was "Bracknell".
I've found it quite remarkable as to how many people do actually remember them, given that, although relatively popular in the 90s, they weren't exactly up there with Oasis and Blur. What I found even more remarkable was the fact that so many teenagers and young adults at the gig knew the words to most of their songs. Looks like their music has transcended generations with, as you rightly highlight, WDYTYA being a particular favourite.
@spitbull1963 Sorry to hear that. Nothing worse than building yourself up for a gig only for it to turn out to be a bit of a damp squib. Hopefully Cliff Richards' "Mistletoe and Wine" wasn't part of her Xmas repertoire. Now that really would have been rubbing salt into the wound.
