Yesterday we had the Lords statement on Ann Widdecombe. Some lovely tributes from across the House, although some implicit anti-Reform vibes. So glad @CatharineHoey called this out. I raised the worry of using Ann's brutal killing to justify yet more state censorship of online opinions. That would be a real insult to Ann, whose Oxford Union speech is now being shared widely - in which she proves her passionate, unapologetic commitment to free speech. Hopefully some of my fellow noble Lords will watch it!

The social contract has become a gigantic piss take. We pay national insurance years in advance to fund the government, yet the government are taking our tax money and extending the age of the state pension to 68. National insurance and the state pension has become like a Ponzi scheme. Millions of people depend on the state pension from their decades of national insurance payments and yet the government are now intending to push the state pension to an age where many people will struggle to find work. Meanwhile, the government spaff away our tax money on wars, net zero, wealth transfers to corporate contracts and their own massive pensions and expenses. Absolutely shameful.

A dramatic development: The murder of Ann Widdecombe is now being treated as terrorism. Specialist officers from Counter Terrorism Policing have taken over the investigation into the death of the 78-year-old former minister in Devon last week.

Since I wrote this blog multiple whistleblowers have contacted @ClaireCoutinho with allegations that @neso_energy has been hiding issues around grid security specifically in relation to 23 June On 2 July I submitted an FOI request asking if the grid was secure that day. I have yet to receive a response although the deadline to reply isn't until 6 August (20 working days). I'm going to be very interested to see how candid they are in light of these claims @energygovuk @ofgem

This information is also allegedly being hidden from the public. This morning NESO refused to deny that Corporate Affairs staff had interfered in operational decisions to avoid reputational damage. These whistleblowers are coming to me because they are worried that the grid is becoming unmanageable and they do not have faith that their concerns are being taken seriously. I have written to the CEO of NESO asking them to bring in an independent external investigator to interview control room engineers so that we can find out the truth about what happened on the evening of 23rd June.

Did anyone notice that Keir welled up a little bit when announcing his resignation?
