And before anyone starts disparaging tech workers regarding today's worldwide outage: Yes, things occasionally go wrong, and when they do, it's spectacular. That's a fault of our overdependence on these things, their interconnectedness, and the global software supply chain interdependencies. If you truly knew how jerry-rigged and brittle all the tech you rely on was, you'd give them all raises, because they're the ones constantly scrambling behind the scenes to keep all the plates spinning and all the balls in the air just so you can have your 3am Taco Bell fix delivered. If it weren't for the people who're gonna be working 24/7 for the next week or so to update hundreds of thousands of individual computers, everything would have crashed and burned decades ago.

Looking at a college degree and expecting it to do something for you is exactly the same thinking that's behind stupidity like "guns kill people". If you have a degree and aren't earning enough money to do something like, say, pay off your student loans, the problem isn't the degree. The problem is YOU. College degrees don't go out and earn money. You do. Guns don't kill people. People do. Steroids don't grow muscles. You have to put in the work. Having food in the kitchen doesn't make you less hungry. You have to cook it and eat. Attending school doesn't get you an education. It affords you the opportunity to put in the work to educate yourself.

there is 100% a skills gap in cyber security.... where? BUSINESS Business leadership have a lack of cyber understanding IT departments: often have a significant lack of understanding of how cyber security works (e.g. lack of specialist skills) HR departments: think a CISSP is required for L1 analysts (they copy pasta each others job specs from other companies) Training companies: sell the idea if you spend money with them you will get mega salaries CYBER STARTERS This is where experience creates a challenge (the lack of it) What people perceive or are taught about how 'CYBER' works vs what occurs IRL. Cyber security improvement is about BUSINESS CHANGE often in a constrained and hostile environment (hostile in the fact the stakeholders don't understand cyber and therefore are conditioned by LinkedIn and marketing crap) It is simply fantasy to suggest we don't have a skills gap (we do) (it just isn't how people often describe it) It's just not all about skills. it's about experiance, business, project management, business analysis, finance, programme management, marketing, communications etc. etc. people think about cyber and jump to reverse engineering etc. there simply aren't the volume of roles in this space because that's not where society is struggling.

I'll come out and say it. We don't have a cybersecurity skills gap. We have a chronic gap between what a company wants and their budget for those skills and reality.
