Say goodbye to your local bodega. And after that, say goodbye to the government-subsidized grocery store once it inevitably collapses. This will not work because prices are not a reflection of someone’s “greed”, they’re a signal about supply and demand. And when you intentionally distort that signal, very bad things happen. So let me explain to you what’s going to take place here. Some grocery item that used to go for $10, like a slab of meat, will now be sold by NYC for $7. “Yay! Everyone is happy! The government can provide better than the free market!” I’m sure we’ll see a bunch of glowing pieces in mainstream media outlets fawning over Mamdani just like they did to Chavez before it all went to hell in Venezuela. But behind the scenes, New York City has not made that slab of meat cost $7 to society. That missing $3 has to come from somewhere. And it’s either going to show up in the form of higher taxes, longer lines in the store, empty shelves, poorer quality foods, horrible customer service, higher regional inflation, or chronic shortages followed by government rationing at the government-run store. It’ll probably get some combination of all of the following, but not before some obnoxious honeymoon period where the media pretends like Mamdani is some innovative trailblazer for implementing a thoroughly debunked economic policy from a century ago.
