We don't have any direct lenders in Ghana but we do have a large network of partners who may be able to assist. Regarding high interest rates, we try to educate our clients on how it all works. For commercial/ business finance, with some lenders the reason it's higher interest on a first borrow is because it is a risk for lenders to fund a new customer (particularly if they don't have a strong credit history), for unsecured loans especially, as there is no collateral and they have no way of fully recovering their money should you default. The best thing to do is take out a very, very small loan from a lender, and pay it back either on time or early. This builds trust, if the lender sees that you repay your debt then the next time you apply for a loan with them you will get much better interest rates, a longer term and usually be approved for a higher amount. I'm not sure what it's like in Ghana but in the UK, US and other countries we work in, there are many flexible lenders and you can take out an unsecured facility with them, and once you have repaid 40-50% of the loan you can ask for a 'top up' and receive more funds with reduced interest, as they trust you. Think of it like this - if someone asks you to lend them money, and they are a total stranger and they no previous history of borrowing money from you or anyone else and paying it back, would you do it, unless there was a high reward for the risk? No. But, when that person pays you back and you make decent money from the interest, the next time that person asks to borrow they're not a total stranger, they're now your friend and already paid you back in the past so you know they're good for it. You'd (as the lender) see it as less of a risk and want to continue to work with that person/business long term and will give them a better deal so they keep coming back to you as a customer and don't go elsewhere. They're getting a large chunk money whenever they need it, and you're making a bit of money from the interest so everyone's happy, and you won't want to keep exploiting that person because you're friends now so you'll make it cheaper for them and give them 'mates rates.' It works this way in business in general. Say you're a marketing agency and you have a client who you've worked with a while, and they then increase the money they're paying you and buy additional services, they're likely to ask for a discount, and if you're smart you'll give it to them to continue working with together long term, building a strong relationship based on trust, respect and mutual benefits. This is how it works with many ethical unsecured lenders, get over that trust barrier and you have a friend who will help you out financially when you need it, and won't charge you a fortune the 2nd, 3rd etc time you borrow because the lender knows they're not going to lose money. This is the truth ladies and gentlemen. Trust when we say this, do NOT wait until it's too late. Lenders will red flag a recent drop in revenue, even if your business had a solid year overall.
