BREAKING: According to BILD, German authorities are treating the overnight incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport as a suspected attempted attack after a drone carrying what investigators believe to be an explosive device was discovered on the airport apron. The airport was immediately closed while police and bomb disposal units responded. According to the report, X-ray examinations identified a detonator attached to the package, and initial tests for explosive material reportedly returned positive. Authorities believe the detonator malfunctioned, preventing the device from exploding. The drone was found near several Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft parked at the airport. Leipzig/Halle is Germany's second-busiest cargo airport and DHL's main European air hub, making it one of Europe's most strategically important logistics centers, including for cargo transported to Ukraine BILD further reports that, while the airport was closed, a DHL cargo aircraft aborted its landing. During the go-around, the crew reported striking an unknown object at approximately 400 meters altitude, around 6 km from the airport. The aircraft later landed safely in Hanover, where damage to its nose section was discovered. German authorities are reportedly investigating whether the object may also have been a drone. The Federal Ministry of the Interior has confirmed the collision, while the investigation remains ongoing. According to BILD, NATO investigators are also expected to participate in examining the recovered drone and explosive device. The incident inevitably recalls the 2024 sabotage campaign that European and British investigators attributed to Russia's military intelligence service (GRU). Investigators concluded that self-igniting parcel devices had been placed into European logistics networks, including DHL and DPD, in what officials described as a coordinated sabotage operation. During that campaign: • 20 July 2024: A parcel caught fire at Leipzig/Halle Airport shortly before it was due to be loaded onto a cargo aircraft. • 21 July 2024: An incendiary device detonated inside a DPD delivery truck in Poland, while another package reportedly failed to ignite because of a malfunction. • 22 July 2024: Another device exploded inside a DHL warehouse near Birmingham, United Kingdom. At this stage, German authorities have not publicly linked today's incident to any foreign actor. Investigations into the recovered drone, the explosive device and the reported collision involving the DHL aircraft are ongoing.
