Ghostty is getting automatic scrollback compression, resulting in 70 to 90% less physical memory usage. It happens incrementally when idle, so it had no measurable effect on IO throughput. I'm not aware of any other mainstream terminal that does this. Demo video below! The gains let us increase the default scrollback limit from 10MB to 50MB, because on average a full scrollback will still compress smaller than the prior limit. More history, for free. ("Unlimited", disk-paged history is on the roadmap too) Let's talk about cool implementation details, cause this was fun. First, the data structure and memory layout ("PageList") I wrote two years ago finally pays off! One of its traits is that screen memory is backed by a linked list of page-aligned, page-sized (or page-multiple-sized) blocks. Because each block is page-aligned and page-sized, we can use madvise to discard its physical backing while keeping the virtual address space reserved. Compressed pages therefore disappear from resident memory, but decompression is still guaranteed because the address space remains valid and we simply fault new pages back in as needed. We use the same trick for our memory pools, too. Unallocated pool pages don't count as resident memory, saving another couple of MB per terminal. This functionality is also available to libghostty-vt consumers via new `ghostty_terminal_compress` APIs. The consumer decides when the appropriate time to compress is and the APIs advise on compressability.

On Thursday, the European Parliament votes on Chat Control 1 (the voluntary scanning, not the mandatory scanning, called Chat Control 2). Again. The Parliament has already voted against Chat Control 1. Two times. But the Council of Ministers and the Parliament President refuse to accept it. Now, the Council has demanded an urgent procedure. This is a procedure that is meant to be used for new legislative proposals, not proposals that the Parliament has already rejected. An urgent procedure requires an absolute majority to be rejected (361 out of the Parliament's 720 members). This will be difficult to reach, since those who abstain from voting are counted as a yes-vote in an urgent procedure. By scheduling the vote during the summer, they are making it even harder to reach those 361 no-votes. This is downright dirty tactic by the Council and the President of the European Parliament. Mind boggling to me that I can make a thing faster and there's always people that ask "but why?" What kind of mentality is that? The pursuit of excellence does not need justification. Also, I find in so many cases, we can't know the impact of an improvement until we do it. For example, one I've talked about before: Ghostty's high IO throughput has enabled terminal program (emulator and TUI) fuzzing at a speed thats incomparably fast to prior solutions. This has resulted in upstream patches to resolve issues in popular projects like btop, tmux, and more. Speed enabled that anecdotally example that lifted the tides of adjacent communities that don't rely on Ghostty technology at all. I didn't predict this. Make things better because they can be better and let the results naturally play out.

just a heads up that you shouldn't use unknown ai "browsers" if you value the safety of your data. all of them are susceptible to prompt injection and many of them have unpatched RCE vulnerabilities and all of that is typically built on top of a very outdated chromium base
