Half the books you were "forced" to read in high school are actually spectacular, you just didn't have the emotional maturity to understand them yet.
The classics are worth reading at any age, but they resonate in shocking ways as you get older. I didnât really âgetâ Great Expectations until Iâd suffered some pretty painful humiliations in my teens and twenties. Here in my late thirties Iâve found myself desperate for practical wisdom about how the world works and our purpose and place in it. And increasingly I gravitate to writers (such as Dante, Proust, Cao Xueqin, Jane Austen and George Eliot) who can offer that. When you reach middle age you find yourself occasionally waking up in a cold sweat in the middle of the night wondering if youâve wasted your life, wondering how to be a good person. And when that happens, youâll find that the classics bring solace and wisdom.
A thought (not original): Many of us read great novels when weâre in high school and college â and have relatively little experience of life. We would understand and appreciate them a lot more at age, say, 50. The system seems backward in this respect!
Our country has become so desensitised to this image that we have children chanting âlet them drownâ. This man matters exactly as much as you matter. He mattered to loved ones just as much as your family matter to you. Safe routes or barbarism. Always has been that simple.
