@smerconish I think it can cross the line into inciting violence with specifically directed words, so I voted no, but in general I’d say speech is protected if just disagreeable.

@BangyTalks @ronawang I took my professional headshot and gave the same directions. The first result was to make me look more Asian. The second try made me light brown/blonde. I am an older person with mostly gray, formerly dark. Next one made me look very masculine.

@GiftedTawk PS. As a habit if I have a colleagues child I ask them how they’d like communication. Many say talk to my spouse, so it doesn’t get too easy to talk about student in the hall or about minor things.

@GiftedTawk I taught un my kids’ high school and had my daughter by the luck of the draw. My son also got randomly assigned to my class, but i said no. I never chose teachers, although many do. Warning: my classroom became their locker and they stole my gum😂.

@pickover I used to use a similar problem, but asked “how many rectangles?” It was a great question to demonstrate the usefulness of learning to use a spreadsheet. I used an 8x8 which quickly becomes uncountable without some sort of structured organizational system.

@MrCorleyMath I try to teach kids that “in the real world” they show their work for more than just the teacher, who presumably knows the content well. So on occasion I tell them they must communicate their work to those who don’t understand as well, possibly another student in the class.

@howie_hua My first reaction was that I know 8x15 is 120, (because it’s a fact I happen to know, but could easily come up with a zillion ways) and then I’d just use my understanding of 80% as almost all so it must actually be 120 without a decimal point adjustment.

@saravdwerf I like to impress upon students that they show work for themselves as much as for me, so they can see their thinking. Not as important for algorithmic skill building, but a necessity for sharing thinking in solving problems.
